[E-Type] S1 Rear end toe in

In reply to a message from Norman LUTZ sent Tue 10 Jan 2012:

If the spec is +/- 1/32’’ and yours is 1.5’', how is that within
specs. Maybe I am missing something but that is way to much toe in.
As far as setting the rear toe, if it is out, then something is
bent. Once you rule out your wheels and measurement equipment,
there is a way to adjust it. If you want less toe in, take a torch
and heat up a spot on the rear of the large lower arm about halfway
between the shock mount and the inner pivot. Once you get a cherry
spot, quench it with a wet cold towel. This might have to be
repeated but I have been able to get a degree or two out of each
side. Once done, a bit of black touch up paint and you are done. It
is not hardened metal, just cast so no hardening issues. Other
option is replacement.–
The original message included these comments:

I just finished rebuilding an XJS rear end and that has a total of
1.5 degrees toe-in which is acceptable as the OE spec is +/- 1/32’'.
