[E-Type] S2 OTS Driveline Whine

I have been making short 20 mile or so runs with the ‘‘new’’
car to shake out the bugs and am enjoying every minute of
it; even when I find a bug.

The problem; the car has a driveline whine and strangely I
can’t decide if it is the gearbox or diff. I think that the
sound is also being transmitted along the prop-shaft tunnel.

Symptoms:
Generally all is good and quiet until I slip the car into
4th then the whine develops as I go onto the gas. When I
lift off all goes nice and silent again. If I take the car
above about 50 the whine seems to disappear; I realize that
I might just be leaving it behind along with the exhaust
note. HOWEVER, at the lower speeds in 4th, if I change down
to 3rd I think that I can still hear it, but not as pronounced.

When I first got the car I drove it about 30 miles up to
Lippincott’s for the structural work. I don’t remember this
whine being present. Since then I have:

  • had Terry replace the diff pinion seal
  • replaced the diff oil with Valvoline 80W-90 gear oil and
Trans-X Posi Trac limited slip diff gear oil additive
    (recommended by Terry)
  • replaced the gearbox oil with Gm synchromesh Trans Fluid
    (again recommended by Terry)

Predominantly only in 4th would suggest a gearbox issue, but
then again maybe it is diff RPM related as the pinion nut
was disturbed.

Any thoughts.

Thanks.–

Further pondering on this and I know it would be easier if I
could tell where the noise was coming from.

My experience has always been that 1st and 2nd gears have
the hardest life and would start to whine. I have never had
a car with a 4th gear whine.

On the diff side. Could something have been disturbed when
the pinion seal was replaced?

Without wishing to start an oil war; how good are the ones I
listed above in an E-Type application?–

Ian ,
To enable you to determine if it is the gearbox or what
other part of the driveline is making the whine, perhaps
this diagnostic tool would help?

Cool, you can never have enough tools.

I had a chat with Terry Lippincott today and he has seen
those symptoms from a diff before. He may have disturbed
something when doing the pinion seal or it may have been
that a thicker oil had previously been hiding the whine.

In the short term, does anyone have any ideas on either an
alternative oil or additive that will reduce the whine
without further damaging the diff?

Long term, I am probably in the market for a diff
replacement so I will be on the lookout for a 3.31 or 3.07.–

Ian,
I tried synthetics in the trans & rear diff, and found they leaked
more and the trans ‘‘rattled’’ more. I went back to plain 'ole gear
oil like Terry has in your car.

If you would like to re gear, and you have a whining diff - Why not
have Terry install a 3.07 ring and pinion and new bearings in your
current diff. Parts are inexpensive ($500+/-).

If you have to fix the whine - he’ll be in there anyway. And you’ll
have all new parts, which guarantees the diff whine will be gone.
(assuming proper gear lash is set - which I am sure Mr Lippincott
is fully capable of). You’ll enjoy the new gear ratio - I do!

Thanks Dave. Terry had mentioned that the bearings Jag used
for my model year are very expensive compared to the
previous ones, so he recommended trying to find an earlier
unit to rebuild. I realize that may not be easy due to
supply and demand of the 3.07 and 3.31 units.–

Jag used a double row ball bearing on the output shafts to the
wheels. The specific bearing is no longer made, so the aftermarket
sells a bearing with a spacer. I don’t know if that works well or
for long. Most of the diff casings themselves interchange I think
fitting the brakes can sometimes be an issue. Most of the used
diffs are from sedans w/o power-lok (posi), but ARE 2.88 or 3.07.

You can put later model year L&R output flanges in your diff that
use roller bearings similar in design to the original S-1. (Mine
came from an XJS). Terry would know best what your options are and
what route will save his time and your money.
good luck!
