[E-Type] S3 V12 Carburrettor removal nuts

Hi,

Getting the nuts of drives me nuts

How does one get the nuts of to disconnect the carb from the
unduction housing. Can’t get to the nuts with normal
spanners. Also because of the emission control pipes that
are in the way. It would seem that you’ll need some kind of
‘‘bend’’ spanner.

Thx,
Geert–

Dear Geert,

Drain enough of the coolant to let you remove the water jackets and
carburettors together as a single unit by undoing the hose clamps
at either end. Then you can get to the carburetors as easily as you
like once they are sitting on the kitchen table.

kind regards

Hi Marek,

Thanks. I’ll have a look when I’m back in the workshop. That
would indeed make it a lot easier. Assuming there isn’t too
much of the emission control piping in the way :-). Guess
I’d better get rid of all those pipes …

Thanks,
Geert–

Hi Geert,
Marek is right, they are a bitch to get off the manifold
without taking the manifold off the engine first, but it can be
done. I ended up buying ‘‘stubby’’ spanners that are about half
the length of a ‘‘normal’’ spanner. It’s a fiddly job that will
make you remember all the swear words you have in your
vocabulary, so you might be better off following Marek’s
advice.–

I think I cut one of my 1/2’’ open/box end ‘spanners’ in half,
drilled a hole in the end of the open ended portion and put a
piece of string through the hole. Very useful tool but the
stubby wrenches should work great too. The string helps you
find it when it falls into the black hole…

Thanks all for the hints.

And guess what I tried last sunday  cutting in half a
13 (ligthly bigger then 1/2) and while looking at it
thinking: better drill a hole and use a string  needed
3 times to fish the spanner out

Was also thinking of bending a spanner. Maybe that does
also the trick.

Something like this could also work:

Set-of-12-point-3-8-Drive-adaptors-J5100-/380843387260
But costly.

Guess Marek’s idea will be the best.

Don’t know when I’ll have time to go to the workshop, but
will keep you updated.

Have a nice evening,

Huh?

I took them off a year ago, and I didn’t think it was that
difficult?

Ok, it took me at least three times longer than getting
the three SU’s off a 4.2 but still not that bad.

I do have all kinds of 1/2 UNF and 13mm spanners with
angles and ratcheting ones as well as thin wall 1/4’’
sockets and I think I used all of them in the process.

But of course before I did that I had removed all the
vacuum, breathing hoses, connecting pipes, fuel lines,
etc.

also… I’ve a short open end half inch for such purposes. A box end helps break it loose, then an open end to remove it.

Lack of time for now, but took some pictures. At first
glance, removing the induction housings and carbs together
will need quite some other piping removal. Still valid
option, thanks Marek.

The problem with loosening the bottom nuts is mostly the
‘‘Pipe gas recirculation system’’. If I could remove this
pipe without losing something behind the exhaust heat
shield, I guess taking of the carbs would be feasible.

From the pictures in the parts list, I think the adapter
goes straight into the exhaust manifold and then it should
be no problem. Guess no need to put it back also when
remounting (just close of with a bolt).

Would value opinions.

Thanks and good evening to all,
