[E-Type] Satellite location

I just noticed a cool article in the NY Times about personal
satellite location becons for backcountry explorers. Right
now they require physical activation. But clearly they
could just as easily be designed to work with remote
triggering. They work anywhere in the world.

This is likely the future of car recovery.

Here is the article site:

Here is the search and rescue website:

http://www.sarsat.noaa.gov/

And here is the website of one of the companies making beacons:

http://www.acrelectronics.com/

Hopefully a resonably priced device is probably only a few
years off.

Ciao,

Larry,

The future of car recovery is here. There are a number of companies making
systems that combine GPS with cellular technology. The GPS module monitors
the vehicle’s location, speed etc. This information is transmitted to a web
server via a periodic upload on the cell modem. This information can be
accessed by anyone with internet access and the proper passcodes.

If you’ve rented a car recently, there is a very strong possibility your
journey was monitored by such a system. Most car rental companies use them,
they just don’t tell their customers about it.

See www.driveok.com for an explanation of how such a system works.

A distress signal from an ELT will bring out the search and
rescue teams and a couple of C-130s to look for you.

All airplanes in north america have been required to carry
one for probably the last 30 years and they are quite
expensive to keep certified and powered. And for something
as trivial as a stolen car, when you get the bill for the
C-130s etc, you might just wish you’d let the E Type go

Maybe something more on the lines of the current truck
tracking GPS systems would be better.–

Years ago, their was a satirical movie, Tunnelvision, or maybe Kentucky
Fried Movie, that had a spoof commercial for the “Finster Fry & Die” car
alarm. Sort of a taser on steroids approach.

“But officer, I have no clue how he got across the high voltage while
sitting in the drivers seat.”

Several years ago I recall reading about some of the anti-hijacking
devices that were being used in South Africa, one of them shot out
flames from the side of the car…
