[E-Type] screen seal

Hiya,

I received my new windscreen last week and did the tear down
on the old one yesterday. I was really hoping to not need a
new seal as I’d just installed that one not too long ago
when the car was painted. However in the process of
removing the glass, a long section of the seal in the corner
split in half. I suspect that the metal lip onto which the
seal rests gradually cut through the thin rubber joint.

Is there a way to avoid this? When it was installed we just
slipped the rubber over it, than inserted the glass. Should
the rubber instead be glued to the metal lip in a few
strategic spots so it can take some of the weight?

Do all the usuals sell basically the same gasket at this
time, or do any of them have a superior profile?–

I had the exact same issue when I installed my new Series 3
windshield a few years back. I ordered a new seal through
SNGB and could clearly see the thicker profile of the area in
question.–

I finally gave up on getting good seals state side and
order door and glass seals directly from COH Bains in the
UK. Excellent quality, correct profile and nice and soft.
Highly recommended. The windscreen seal was a perfect fit.
I stuck it to the metal body flange first (without adhesive
sealant), then a day or so before I was to install the
windscreen, inserted a nylon rope, slightly larger than the
thickness of the glass into the seal to give it some
memory. With plenty of soapy water sprayed into the seal
grove, the glass slipped right in- and this on a DHC!. It
was the chrome inserts that took considerable effort to
install.–
