[E-Type] Series 1 3.8 Radio Speakers

I need to get new speakers that will fit in the
factory console of the 3.8 E. They are round 4"
speakers and need to be quite 'shallow" in depth. I
don’t intend to add any additional speakers around the
car and don’t harbor any illusions of getting great
sound, but would like to get reasonably good sound
without spending a lot of $$$$$. There are a huge
number of variables in selecting speakers and I have
no idea which is better. A check of the archives
indicates that Pioneer TS-A1057 2 way speakers will
fit? There are also 3 & 4 way speakers offerred. How
many ‘ways’ do I need? How do I determine what # of
volts/watts, etc., etc. I need??? As you may have
guessed, electronics is not my strong suit. Please
help lead me out of the forest.

Hi Larry,

Well, in terms of what fits:

I just completed a pretty wide search for speakers. I wound
up getting the Blaupunkt Overdrive coax ODx402 speakers.
Ordering them locally at any shop in the LA area was tough.
I ordered them over the web from:

http://www.midwestelectronics.com/

Blaupunkt USA has their manual/installation guide
on the web. It has everything you need to figure out what
size will fit.

The bad news is that the early 60’s Bluapunkt Frankfurt
radio I installed doesn’t drive them with enough power to
hear them while driving. At an intersection or while
parked: no problem. But when driving faster than 35 mph
there is no way. I think my radio puts out 5 watts or less.
I’ve found that a 30 or 35 watt amplifier is too big to fit
in available spaces.

My plan for sounds? A battery powered Ipod stereo. They
are really loud, small, and sound great. I’ll leave the
radio in for looks. But I plan to chuck the Ipod stereo
behind the seat whenever I want to listen to music. My kids
have converted me to Ipods. They are absolutely great!

As an aside: I’m planning on driving up to Newcomb’s ranch
for breakfast this Saturday morning. I’ll be leaving from
the UA theater gathering in La Canada a little after 8 am as
I have to get my son back for a 11:15 soccer game in
Pasadena. Interested in joining us?

Finally, do you have the grills? I can show you where to
get them if needed.

Cheers,

Larry–

If your console is the early type with chrome grilles, like
mine, I think regular XJ6/12 speakers will fit. You can also
probably get them for next to nothing, together with the
grilles which appear the same.

I haven’t got around to installing them yet, but they are
solid looking Phillips dual cone, a bit more than 4’’ dia and
2 1/4’’ deep.

Incidentally, I have several Blaupunkt automotive speakers
and most of them have just fallen apart, the foam around the
edge of the cone just disintegrating. Some of those were
their top-of-line models.–

Larry,
It’s going to sound like crap no matter what you put in. That little
console provides no acoustic isolation whatsoever. It didnt really need to
originally as the stock radio would have been mono, and I think it even had
only one speaker.

I bought the same Blaupunkt set that Larry W put in, and had the same poor
results. I probably even have the same head unit, a Blaupunkt Koln.
Absolute crap sound. I was reminded of the scene from “Auto Focus” when the

Willem Dafoe character is showing of the 6 watts of pumping power he just
installed in his E-type to Bob Crane.

I spent about $50 for them on Ebay. If you want to spend that much then I
guarantee that they’ll fit. Otherwise just find the crappiest old 4" pressed
steel frame garbage you can dig up at a junkyard, and it will sound just as
good, or rather, bad.

Hi Larry, Thanks for the information and invitation. I
just read your email (9;00 AM) and have other
obligations, so I won’t be able to join you.
You and others have confirmed my suspicion that it
doesn’t make sense to try to make the radio sound even
reasonably good, so there would not seem to be any
benefit to throwing a lot of $$ at it. I guess I will
go with craptistic speakers just to have something to
fill the holes. I might look into the iPod solution
but, as I don’t have kids, I’m still stuck in the
60’s. I do have a new set of the chrome grills that
look very nice in the black console. Have a good run
to Newcomb’s ranch and back. Regards,

Thanks for your replies Eric and Clive. You have
confirmed what I already knew from experience, but
didn’t really want to believe. I’ll look into the
XJ6/12 speakers or find some other craptistic speakers
to fill the holes so that I can put the console back
in the car. Needless to say, I’m looking foreward to
that excercize.

In reply to a message from JOHN KOHLER sent Sat 20 Oct 2007:

Larry,

I guess the 3.8 later console must be different – my ‘64 FHC now
has 6 1/2’’ Pioneer speakers, and a '70s Alpine stereo. When the
car is stopped, it sounds great! Underway, however all the Bass
seems to go away and the Alpine can’t pump out enough power to
drive the overall volume high enough. Also, the original grilles
press on the rubber cone suspension and damps out a lot of bass at
high volumes.

I have a potential solution in the mail from Crutchfield – an
Infinity component speaker setup – separate woofers and tweeters
with crossover. The woofers don’t have the central tweeters of the
old speakers, and I am hoping there will be more room to avoid the
damping I get now. I am hoping this will improve the bass.

My plan is to install the tweeters just at the windshield at the
corners of the dash. Flat plastic tabs will just push between dash
and windshield, and the tweeters will be pointed right at the
ears. I hope that will improve the volume and the treble while
underway.

Hi Jerry, I also have a 64 FHC and , as best I
recall, it has 4" speakers also. I guess that I will
have to measure them to confirm and let you know. The
64 also has the standard chrome speaker grills too.

both my caqrs have the early housings with the cute
little chrome screens and surrounds. Mine also have

Richard,
The early 3.8 has a narrow flat sided console, not the
extended plastic moldings like Jerry’s later 3.8. So
depending on the radio width, there’s even less room for
speaker magnets than any later car.–
