I just got back last night after a road trip from St. Louis,
MO to the Anchorage, AK area in my X-type. I have to say
that after spending a week in the car, I can make a few
comparisons. The X-type gets better gas mileage and range.
The X-type holds a lot more ‘stuff’. The E-type seat is MUCH
more comfortable! I only spent 8 days in the X-type this
most recent trip, compared to 11 days in the E-type last
year. I went well over 8,000 miles last year on the road
trip in the E-type, and only half that far in the X-type. My
rear was more sore after spending much less time in the
saddle with the X-type. I don’t think it is noticeable in
normal, short trips, but on long trips…–

Very interesting data, Tom. My wife claims my sII ots is noisy, loud, uncomfortable, short-fat-dumb-ugly-and-mean and windy so won’t take long trips with me.

After 30 years of long road trips in a 4-cylinder Triumph
TR, my wife thinks the E-Type is a great ride.
Just a matter of perspective perhaps.–

I know of what you speak, Tom. The seats are the weak spot in the
X-Type. I actually prefer my Series 1 seats to those in the X for
a long trip. Of course, for real comfort there is always the XJ…

Tom,
I’m remembering your trip accounts (including WW I FlyIn)
from last year. Great job!
I am planning on a few trips to Duluth this summer in my
Series III. The seats are refurbished originals, and I am
counting on the two rows of 14 8-inch louvres glinting in
the sunshine to aid in the comfort.
No cruise control so far.

Phil, you will definitely want a cruise control for that
many hours on the interstate. It allows you to look at the
scenery and mentally go to your happy place, instead of
frequently looking at the speedometer and pressing on the
gas pedal all day. And yes, those louvres and curves in the
bonnet when viewed from the driver’s seat are pure
seduction. Like writing with an expensive fountain pen, pure
pleasure.–

I’ll second that cruise control suggestion as it was Tom’s
installation that inspired and guided mine.
I had my first long road trip with it last month and it
certainly makes for more comfortable days on the road.–
