[E-Type] Series II water pumps

As mentioned in my last email, I am doing cooling
system work on my newly purchased 69 OTS.

The car seems to have a metallic noise coming
from the front of the engine. It SEEMS to be
the water pump, as the noise goes away when
I remove it’s belt.

I removed the water pump, and inspected it,
but didn’t see anything large and obvious as
I was expecting. The impeller turns freely
and doesn’t show any side to side looseness.

When I spin it as hand as fast as I can,
there seems to be a slight warbling noise,
but it certainly isn’t as much as I would
expect from the way it sounds on the engine.

Ideas? What is the failure mode of the
water pump that causes it to make noise
like this?–

go directly to jail. do not pass go.
Oh, wait a minute. wrong e-mail list. Yes, your water pump is dying.
Be happy it did so in a polite and safe manner. Purchase one of the new
aluminum high capacity pumps from Dan or Tony, well worth it.

Hehehe… is this being confused with the
$6000 E-type being discussed on the MG list? ;>

Yes, your water pump is dying.

Can you confirm that even though the water pump
seems more or less ok in my hand that it really
could be dead and causing that noise?

I would just hate to buy a new pump, assemble
it all, then realize it’s something else like
an impending timing chain failure.

Thanks.

Alas, I do not have a high performance waterpump in my line up. Over to you
on this one Tony

From your description, sounds like the water pump shaft bearing as s***
the bed. It could be worse: it could have catastrophically seized and/or
it could have happened in a galaxy far, far away.

Be happy it happened slowly and in your own drive.

OK, let’s hear more about the Abingdon guy’s $6,000 E-Type. Gotta be good
for a laugh!

He’s considering it. Most of us are advising against.

It’s a hard top, but unsure if it’s FHC or 2+2, I don’t think
he knew there was a difference when he saw it.

It’s very rusty, he mentioned a hole in the bonnet big enough
to put a childs head in.

The engine is one of those “it used to run” stories, which
usually involve the seller honestly beleiving it ran last year
but his mind is going and it was actually 1978 and it made
a big bang the day it stopped running.

I can understand it being tempting, but scary thought.

…sounds like the bearing is just starting to go. Eventually if
you’re lucky, it will shake so much the water seal will give way and
the water will pour out. If you aren’t lucky it will sieze or explode
(fly apart) and cause a mess and a tow bill.

Well, I took it to the local LBC shop, and he agreed the bearing
wasn’t as smooth as it should be. He wasn’t sure if this was my
problem but he said it was “a” problem, so he rebuilt it.

Funny, after he said he’d rebuild it, he went upstairs, came
back with a new water pump, pressed out the shaft, and threw
the rest away. I asked “isn’t that a bit of an expensive way
to do this?”.

He laughed, because he said a few years ago he had an opportunity
to buy closeout stock of NOS Land Rover water pumps, so he bought
a trailerload. The shafts and bearings are identical to most british
cars, so he has a stock ready at all times to rebuild jag ones.–
