I understand that the firewall blanking plates on some E types were
black and some were body colored. I can’t tell which mine were so
I thought I’d take a poll before busting out the paint gun.
How many people have cars with body colored blanking plates?
How many people have cars with black blanking plates?
Are the black ones gloss or semi-gloss?

AFAIK, on early Jags (my '63 is original), they’re neither: they
were a galvanized-type of situation. Not sure if that carried
through, but I think it did.–

If you’re referring to the blank panels for the right hand
brake/clutch pedal assemblies, mine are silver.–

Herb,
If you are referring to the round plates on the vertical surface that
were on the 3,8’s and very early 4.2’s, they were black. The brake/
clutch and accelerator were cad plated or something similar.

None of the ‘above’, as an independent I vote zinc plated.

Plated a silver colour. I had mine dull nickel plated - lasts
better than zinc.–

Herb,
Mine are neither body color or black, they’re unpainted.

The polls are closed. Most responded that I was mistaken on both
counts. The concensus is that the blanking plates should be a
silvery grey. Definitely not black. Many opinions on what caused
the silvery grey appearance.
I mis-read the judging standards according to which the blanking
plates can be either body colored or cad plated. No one responded
that theirs were originally body colored. I think I’ll plate mine
in zinc. Being a heavy metal cadmium is hard to get and dulls
faster than zink.
Thanks to all contributors.–

Plated, indeed.
Cad I think, but bright zinc plate (as opposed to galvanised
finish) would probably look right once it dulled a little. Parking
in a coastal location or the centre of a big city would probably do
that in a week :-)–
