May need a bit more info than you initially provided to venture a recommendation:

  1. Year and style (2+2, Coupe, OTS) of Jag

  2. Manual or auto tranny

  3. General condition of mechanicals

  4. Any mods made or missing pieces

  5. Last tune-up was done ________ and current state of tune of carbs (rich or lean)

Hi Ken,

Do a search of the archives for more information.
In good condition your cooling system is more than adequate so
there is a problem somewhere.
Is your radiator in good condition?, is the impeller on your
water pump turning?, Is your mixture to Lean?, Are the fans
turning the right direction? Is the bottom hose collapsing?
etc.
Not suggesting you should follow my lead but I have a Ron
Davis Radiator with coolcat fans running 50/50 antifreeze.
You might try Water Wetter some claim improvement, I didn’t
see it.
Are you spitting out antifreeze, most of us would say your not
overheating unless it’s spewing, not sure overheating is
causing your engine to stall, maybe coil to hot?
JM2CW,
Cheers,
Lynn–

Ken,

I can’t say for sure on the V12, but on the XK, >80C is
really a normal operating temperature under certain
conditions. In fact, 90C is normal if the needle does not
keep moving up. At 100C you might want to look for
problems.

You are demonstrating the cause of the majority of
‘‘overheating E-Type’’ rumors: Owners not understanding the
car’s operating characteristics. ‘‘My car is overheating,
the needle is sitting on the ‘L’ of NORMAL!!!’’ The middle
center of the temp gauge, 70C, is the BEGINNING of the car’s
operating range.

Now, stopping on its own is a bad symptom, but if the temp
is just a little above 80C, the heat is not causing a normal
failure. Perhaps you have a failing coil or electronic
module, they can be affected by heat. Normally the car that
is really overheating will run up over 110C and coolant
blows out of the cap while the car is still running, if a
little rougher than usual.

Please give a little more detail about a specific failure
and we may be able to help more. Also, what car do you
have, as there are many differences between the versions.

First thing I would do if the gauge is showing overheating
is to verify that with an IR thermometer pointed at the
spot where the temp gauge sender is mounted.

Those sender seem prone to failure and from what I have
seen the usual failure mode is to read high.

If it is indeed hot then go thru the system step by step –
e.g. verify the tstat is opening, note temperature drop
from top of radiator to bottom, verify the fans indeed come
on when you use the manual switch.

As noted elsewhere – mentioning what year/model you have
will help you get best advice.–

I had a faulty coil that caused the engine to stop when stuck in
traffic for more than a few minutes. Engine temp always rises a
little bit when stationary, but not to the extent of overheating.
It was fine when on the move, and I suspect the lack of airflow
over the coil when stationary was a contributory factor. Changed
the coil for a genuine Lucas Sport (gold) coil a few years ago and
never had a problem since.–

That’s a good data point, I never heard of that before.
