[E-Type] Somebody is an ebay dirtball

I put one of my hardtops on ebay last week and things were, I
thought, going well. 5 bids with 33 watchers. At the last minute,
ebay cancelled the auction with a note to me saying that one of the
bidders was a fraud who had taken over someone else’s identity.
Okay, unfortunately that happens and I am glad ebay caught it
before I potentially had to deal with this loser. My reward is
that I will have to relist it, starting from scratch. No way to
just start the listing over again–though they say they are working
on a tool for that. How many programmers do they have working for
them? Arghhh! Certainly no one on this list is the culprit!–

Gordon,
You could always just send a message the high bidder and offer it.

So why couldn’t they just pull the bids from the iffy account and
leave everybody else to carry on bidding?

Too simple?–

Eric,
I can’t even see the auction anymore. I have no idea who the high
bidder was or what they got the bidding up to before it happened.
I know what it was at this morning before I left for work, but I
figure it got some more action near the end as many auctions do.–

First of all, you should assume that fraud artists are sharp enough
to keep current with the hobby in order to offer you the best
scams. In that regard you should assume that at least one fraud
artist will read this post. Even if for some strange reason one
did not, you should always be on your guard. Someone wasn’t, which
is how the scam artist commandeered his identity.

Secondly: this is good as eBay gets. For every change eBay makes,
the scammers are immediately working on ways around it. They’re
smart and they keep current to maximize their influence.

I am a member on another user site for a completely different kind
of car. I buy and sell a unique setup. I can identify the scam
artists through the trails these items pass. A few of them are
very active on that site, and they are knowledgeable - as any scam
artist worth his salt must be.–

I was just talking to ebay(800#) about a billing question I
had and I raised your issue…Basically he said that
they have to stop the listing, credit your fees, and make
you start over. They do this because it effectively is like
a ‘‘shill’’ bid, causing the price to escalate fraudulently.
Also would disallow the bogus identity thief from buying
your item on someone elses account, or contacting you
directly to sell outside ebay. They have to cover all
possible scenarios with this process he said.

Please don’t shoot the messenger. This is what he told me.

It was me… Just kidding. You think that is bad. one time I
bought a car from some ebay dirtball and ebay notified me that he
had had some fradulent dealings and booted him and all his ads off
of ebay. They also erased the auction that I won and had paid for.
So it made it very difficult for me too follow up on this crook.
After many months and dirty phone calls and snooping, I finally got
the piece of crap of a car.

Many of these creeps get kicked off and get an another computer and
start another ebay account. I did find out that most of the history
that this guy had was little nickel and dime items so when he had a
car he was auctioning I should have done a little more research.

I have bought many cars on ebay and have to say that over all. I
have been happy. I know this is not exaclty inline with what your
posting is about but it kind of relates.–
