[E-Type] Sources Sources.. all I need is R& R kit Sources (today)

In reply to a message from Bill McKenna sent Mon 13 Sep 2004:

I had the inner race spin a deep groove on the magneto of my old 64
Johnston V4 boat motor. To fix it I filled the groove with JB weld
and rigged up a way to slowly rotate the shaft until the epoxy
hardened and the next day I spun the shaft and cut the excess off
with a wood chisel. After that I use sand paper to get it closer to
the correct diameter using the new bearing as a guide. Then when it
would just slip on I reassembled the unit and put a little locktite
on the new section to ensure the bearing never slipped there again.
It worked great that way for years.–

shafts are available for the early Lucas 40617A distributor If not has
anyone
ever fixed one of these by brazing the area up and then turning it down
to spec on a lathe, I’ve seen this done on other worn out car parts
which are press fitted, but never on a Distributor shaft?

Hi Bill, I had a heck of time when I was doing the R&R on my E-Type
SIII starter motor, and I have still to find the boot that covers
the lever system which is driven by the solenoid. The usuals have
selected parts, but I never found anyone with a complete set. I was
able to source a gasket/rubber parts kit from Norman Motors in
London UK, and while it was certainly fine inside the package it
was certainly NOS judging by the wearon the paper packaging! John M

In my Campaign to restore the 63 FHC, I am now tearing down small
mechanical bits like the distributor and starter motor.
In each case I need to find R&R kits which contain the wear parts like
bearings, bronze bushings, and brushes (the 3 Bs) I haven’t seen kits
from any of the usual suspects, XKs, Terrys etc.
Is there a good source for Lucas R&R kits?
Bill

thanks John,
I don’t have any rubber parts in my 63 Era Lucas Starter motor.
In this one I just need the brush and spring set, and 2 bronze bushings.
You would think the usuals would at least sell the brushes and bushings
in a kit for these starters.

I just got off the phone with terry’s they don’t know anyone
selling kits for Distributors or starters… however there
are a number of R&R shops putting these things back in shape,
so I am assuming someone out there has these parts. I may
have to get in the business

thanks

Bill,
If you can find those parts, especially the springs, you’re a
better man than me. The closest I ever came was a set of
miscellaneous Lucas dizzy springs (5 pcs.) from Cambridge
Motorsports. No idea if any of them are correct, but you’re
welcome to them if you want to give it a try. I don’t expect I’ll
ever use them.–

bushings are easy enough to machine.–

Well I may take you up on that if it comes to it, but
springs are the least of my worries at this point.

It pisses me off that there is some sort of R&R shop
unwritten law that says we won’t sell parts. I called
a couple of shops that do R&R on Lucas distributors and
tried to get them to sell me parts.

The conversation went somthing like this,
So you do rebuild the lucas distributors…
Yes
And when you do this I assume you put in new springs, bearings
and bushings,
Yes
And I assume you are buying these parts from somewhere.
yes
so where do you get the parts…
Well thats our business, not yours!

geeze… I think I may have to go in the R&R kit business.

Thanks
Bill

possibly some of the parts are being machined locally
but I’m guessing they have found sources for the bearings
and bushings.

It’s a no brainer to press these parts in if you have them
especially on something like a distributor. Mine popped
out in no time flat.

Now building up the main shaft with braze and getting
it to fit true in the bearing that will be a challenge.

Thanks

I doubt if things like vacuum capsules, springs, and breaker plates cost very
much new. But if you’re in that business, its your livelihood and you don’t
want to see them sold widely. (I wouldn’t!)

Bill,
You can hardly blame them, when this is their bread and
butter. They no doubt invested considerable time and effort in
locating sources for the needed parts, so there’s a considerable
dis-incentive for them to enable other to basically take business
away from them. In their position, I’d do the same thing.–

Agree, but you’d think someone some where would go against
the grain, with all the do it yourselfers in the
british car hobby.

You can get water pump rebuild kits, and engine rebuild
kits, brushes for starters and alternators. For GM stuff
you can find kits for just about everything.

I’d think the R&R shops have some mail order catelogue where
they get all these parts and machine next to nothing,
but don’t know for sure.

Thanks
bill

No I agree in principle on this but, for those rare
few who love to tinker on stuff, I’d rather do it myself
and go to the trouble to find the parts if possible.

Hey Bill,
Here’s how I see it- We need those guys! We want to keep them in business so
the guys that stick used parts in and call them “rebuilt” don’t take over the
market. I doubt if they’re driving Rolls Royces with all the money they’re

I don’t use THAT many distributors that I can’t afford to pay to have one
rebuilt on occasion-but I really do want the important parts replaced with new,
not used.

haven’t taken the time to find the parts sources.

mine has 4… for 7.95 I’ll take my chances with the XKs set.
I noticed in the latest XKs magazine that they were

I tried to call them a couple times but couldn’t get
a rep. to help me after 5-10 mins on the phone.
Business must be good!
