[E-Type] Spark Plug Inserts

I was removing the plugs from a friend of mine’s car. I found that
one of the plug holes had been filled with a spark plug insert and
the insert came out with the plug (engine was hot). A few days
later (with the engine cold), I removed the plugs again and, this
time, the insert stayed in the hole.

I am wondering what type of substance (if any) I might put on the
threads of the insert to ensure that it stays in place in the old
spark plug hole in the block.

The inserts we use have a bunch of teeth on the top edge. Once you
screw them into place, there is a special tool to peen the edge
into the aluminum. That way, they will not unscrew. In place of
that, red loctite will work. Just make sure both surfaces are real
clean.–

Hmn… they’re not supposed to do that. I would advise against
loctite or such there, as you have no way of ensuring that it won’t
bond the plug into the insert as well.

A tiny smear of Copa Slip on the plug threads, and perhaps a nice
brass plaque with ‘‘Caution, Plug inserts, only remove sparkplugs
when cold’’

Glen,

Red Loctite should work fine. Just let it setup thoroughly before
putting the plug back in. I’d leave it overnight, just to be sure,
then use anti-sieze on the plug threads.–

I’d use the high temp loctite to be on the safe side. Make sure the
head threads and the insert threads are as clean as possible and
degreased to insure the loctite bonds.

Glen
If I’m not mistaken, the directions call for a high
temperature Loctite.
