[E-Type] Spark Plugs - Ray

Yo Ray…back in feb 05 you recommended using NGK BP5ES plugs. Still feel the same way?

Les,

I’mnot fussy about plugs. I’ve used the NGKs in the past, and they
worked just fine. I’ve had the same set of Champions in the car
for probably 5 years now, and they work just fine as well. Despite
what some people seem to think, plugs is plugs. They pretty much
either work, or they don’t.–

I second that. One codecil: I’ve had a string of bad Bosch
Platinums and have stopped using them, reverting back to NGKs.

Just remember, no matter the brand, use anti-seize on the threads.
Buy what’s on sale, and DO NOT fall for the ‘‘Spitfire’’ plug hoohaw.–

Thanks…just replacing mine that have been on the engine for a few years and wondered if your thoughts were as they were way back when.
I’ve actually just purchased a set of standard BP5ES plugs from NAPA at 2.09 a piece…decent price I thought.
Then I found the NGK Wholesale site who has them for $1.78 a piece…plus shipping of course.
But then I saw they had Iridium plugs for about $7.00 a piece so I bought a set of those too. We’ll see if there’s any real difference on my rich Weber motor, or I just wasted my $$.

On this subject, I’m using NGK BP5Es’s and have no real
complaint with them other than the following; If I start
the car and move it out of the garage to just outside and
sometime later move it back inside, so never getting the
engine up to temp, then the following day, the engine will
miss fire running on maybe only 3 cylinders. I pull the
plugs out, give them a clean with a wire brush then a rinse
with metho and away it goes. The plugs when they come out
are covered with a coating of carbon which I guess is acting
as a good insulator.
I know the obvious solution is to get the engine up to temp
but have never had this problem with other engines. Any
thoughts why this is so???

Well, it does sound like the choke on one or more of the carbs is running very rich and leaves the uber-rich coating, which fouls the plugs next time out.
I have to say though, even this sounds a bit thin…I run my webers pretty much the same way on occasion and have never had this kind of problem, and they do tend to run rich.
As you say, the best solution is probably to let the engine run for a couple of mins to burn off the excess, although I do come back to the over rich choke setting.

Or just go for a good hard DRIVE!

I never move my Jaguar in and out of the garage with a few spirited laps around the county.

Really, that hadn’t occurred to me. I get a backfire
through one of the carbs when I floor it and thought I was
running to lean so have been setting it richer by an 1/8 of
a turn every time I take it for a drive.

You’re right Chuck, but the temp is down to 7 degrees this
morning. Now I know you probably think that’s a barmy day
but for us that is cold.
