Subject: [E-Type] Speedometer needle flutter

Hi All,
I picked up my '67 S1 2+2 yesterday and immediately drove it to a
specialist to have the brakes fixed!

I noticed the speedo needle constantly flutters up and down with
when driving. -/+ 10 MPH around assumed indicated speed. This
makes knowing your speed a bit difficult, especially when
approaching a speed camera in a 30mph area.>

Kevin,
I had that problem when the angle adapter on the end of the cable going into
the transmission rotated a bit at the transmission connection. I moved
(rotated) the adapter until the fluttering stopped. You might give that a try
before the cable breaks and avoid having to replace it.

Good luck

Angle Drive Question:
I was looking at an old speedometer angle drive the other day and was
wondering if anyone has an old non-functional one that you would be willing to part
with. The old one I have is missing the round covers that seal the inner
gears to keep them in the drive. Apparently the staking points failed to keep
the pieces in the housing. If you have one that has the drive cable broken
but still has an intact housing, I would be interested in seeing if I could
swap the pieces onto my drive and have a spare on the shelf if/when the one on
the car decides to twist off the drive cable. Thanks,

Dave Reinke

Kevin,
It may well be that the cable is snagged causing the flutter – BUT
if it has been going on to long I’d also take a look at the bearing
at the back on the speedo unit where the cable locks into. This
happened on my 1970 Series 2 OTS. Ultimatley I had to service the
sppedo unit in order to fix the flutter.–

You can easily test the gauge using a VSR hand drill. Chuck up a
small nail, with a squared-off end that fits into the speedo
input. Put the drill in reverse (IIRC), and spin away. If the
drill drives the speedo without flutter, then the problem is in the
cable, or angle drive.–

First thing i would do, pull the cable and clean it, then lightly
grease it with white lithium or Vaseline and see if it goes away, if
it didn’t then I’d start looking a bit harder.
Cheers,

OK. Been there. My speedo varied greatly. I replaced the
speedo cable with one from SNG which they make right here in
NH. Very rugged and stable compared to earlier ones. But the
initial problem was a lack of lube in the speedo head. Every
time the tenths wheel on the odometer moved, the speedo
jumped. Lubrication of the speedometer itself cured the
jumping. Originally, the speedo jumped because the cable
wound up when the tenths wheel moved and then unwound after
it moved. Fix both causes and you’ll have a dead steady
speedometer. I would be happy if only MOMA didn’t put the
wrong gears in so it reads 10% off on the mileage and reads
55 when the actual speed is 70. Next calibration is going to
be done by Nisonger, that’s for sure.–
