[E-Type] Squeaky brakes

Changed out the front brake discs and pads four years back on the
69 S11. Still like new for pad wear. I recall they were the
standard metallic - pads blue in colour. In the last year they have
really started to squeal on light pedal. They are in tight with
blue silcon anti squeal. Any experience with different pads, mods
or fixes that are quiet? Anything I can do or just get better pads?
Update on the 2.88 diff - all together just have to change out the
mounts and in it goes.
Thanks in advance.

Not specific to e-types but I have had the same problem with my Datsun Z
front disk pads. The squeal was so bad my wife wouldn’t ride in the
car. I tried a different brand of pads which helped for a while then
the squeal came back.

Eventually I found some “anti-squeal” metal shims that fit between the
pads and the caliper pistons. That cured it completely. The shims are
very thin metal with holes for the pins that retain the pads to hold
them in.

It’s been so long since I did the brakes on the e-type that I don’t
remember if it had the shims or if they are even available.

Not sure why it works but it was a 100% cure on both of my Datsun’s.
Does anyone have an explanation as to why this works?

I had a set of pads that sqeeked badly (hot or cold). Tried all the
trick goo, chamfering, slotting - no joy.

Bought some Beck Arnley replacements and they are fine (until I get
them super hot). They cool off and are normal again.
It was years ago that I put the fronts, but for what its worth:

Try some different brand pads.

Often more of a problem on autos I think, where they glaze over
from continual light application to stop the car creeping forwards.

Not the issue here with an S2 OTS, but chamfering helps a bit, as
does roughening up. The big trick IMHO is to use the brakes hard.
Even the worst squealers tend to quieten down on a long hard drive
(only for it to return later when normal driving is resumed).

My tupence:

A summer or two ago, the fronts on my XJ6 develperd a horrible
groan on stoppiing at low speeds. My mind envisaged steel on steel.
Been there!

So, I bought a set of Raybestos pads. They did have the thin metal
shims and goo to put on them. I was familiar with the goo, but not
the shims. It took just a tad more fiddling to get everything lined
up for the pins.

Actually, the rotors were undamaged and pad wear seemed about fifty
percent. Nevertheless I changed them. The anti rattle springs took
too much fiddling, so I left them off.

The half used pads and the springs are on my bits shelf in the box.
Why, I dunno.

The groan went away.

Now, I am facing calipers and pads on the rear. when it gets a tad
warmer around here and, I get the Atlas lathe project done. Right
now, I am sruck with a motor that goed CW, where CCW is needed. I
thought I had it, but one blown fuse later, I didn’t.

Gotta read up some more.
