[E-Type] SS header tank

I bought one of these on a special deal last fall to
replace the aftermarket one on the car. I started to put it
on this past weekend as one winter project. Decided to use
it as-is and paint it later if I didn’t like the look. Good
plan! It didn’t fit.
Ostensibly it’s constructed as standard. Attachment flanges
are 11 1/8’’ apart; Header support bracket on car is 11 3/8’’.
So 1/4’’ short. Mounting holes on tie-bar and support
bracket are 2’’ on center. The welded nuts on the tank are
1.5mm less, so the bolts don’t line up.
Are the tank measurements as per original and is some
shimming and hole modification OE?
While I’m in the complaining mood; wouldn’t you think that
some nice TIG welding would be used instead of MIG blobs?
Also, the aftermarket tank attachment for the Otter switch
allowed the switch to be oriented so the word ‘‘Otter’’ was
at the top. Orientation on the SS tank places the ‘‘Otter’’
more vertically. A small point, but if not original, why
not get it right?
Has anybody found a SS tank that fit without mods or are
they all from the same shop?

I just purchased a SS header tank from xks this past fall.
Quality as good as OEM and fit like a glove. Pressure
tested system after install with no leaks. I’m leaving
mine unpainted as I like the look also. All hoses paired
up perfectly. I would think this supplier has a good
number of these out in the marketplace as have seen them
advertised for some time and yours is the first I’ve seen
with some issues. I purchased the SS tank to replace a
‘‘new’’ replacement tank that would not hold pressure as the
welds to the bracket punched through the tank wall. Can’t
remember where I purchased that one as was some time ago
but it was never in service.
Have you tried contacting your supplier for a replacement?

Yes, I too had similar issues to you Joseph. I ordered one
of these stainless steel header-tanks last year. I was
extremely pleased with the oem look, and thought the
detailing was hard to fault for the series 1 4.2. I also
found that the welded nuts were about 1.5mm different to
the original support brackets. I lightly elongated one hole
in the support brackets to achieve a fit. Apart from that
it was very well made, and I am very pleased with it
overall.
It is disappointing when spares do not fit correctly. I
hope that suppliers/fabricators are using original parts to
copy from, and then they should insist on a trial fit to
confirm the design.
I too could not bring myself to paint it.
