[E-Type] Starter issue

I purchased my car about eight months ago. Since then I
have run at about 20 to 30 times. On three or four
occasions the starter motor would run but would not catch
to turn the engine. It would take 2 to 3 additional tries
for a successful start up.
Any information about what is causing this issue, and
potential solutions greatly appreciated.

Thanks for any guidance

Sounds like the starter solenoid is acting up. May need cleaning the
contacts. Don’t recall if it can be easily pulled off the starter if
so then need 2 yank the starter. Other possibility is low juice off
the battery that doesn’t push the starter gear into the flywheel. On Sun, Mar 15, 2015 at 12:48 PM, Walter boeckhone@msn.com wrote:

Sure looks like a solonoid problem.

It would be wise to install a new starter at the
same time.

In reply to a message from W. Schuster sent Sun 15 Mar 2015:

It is probably a battery problem, the voltage not being
sufficient to spin up the bendix pinion enough to engage
the starter ring gear.
If not, then I would look at the starter motor itself.
The solenoid either works or it doesn’t, and in this case
it would appear to be working.–

Walter, As said already, you should check to ensure all
electrical contacts are good, especially the ground. If all
seems good , then remove sm. The solenoid can most likely be
refurbished…see my photo album!–

Yes, I would second that. Check the battery ground
terminal before anything else … so simple!

This is great. Thanks. Is there a test I can do to
eliminate the battery as a cause besides just buying a new
battery? Also is starter and solenoid replacement a job
that can be accomplished without removing the engine?

Thanks everyone

I think the first thing is to try to jump start with a good
battery. Then try to eliminate the battery wires and
connections by using a direct connection, checking ground
wires ect. Then test solenoid by direct connection. then if
you have to , you can remove the starter. Best to check the
workshop manual for proceedure. I think you may have to
remove RF wheel and lower the starter down, no engine
removal. Are you getting any sound, do your horn and lights
work ?–

Walter, I think yr '71 SII is the same as my '70 SII! The sm
is located at 1 or 2 oclock as you look forward from the
passenger( RHS ) seat. You should find a rubber plug in the
firewall that gives you access to one of the bolts…not sure
about the other one! The sm is removed forward away from the
bell housing…you have to lift it out at waist height from
the right rear area of the engine bay…sort of below the
rear ZS carb. I think the air cleaner, and vacuum tank need
to come out first! No need to remove engine!!–
