[E-Type] Starter motor removal 4.2 series 2

Anybody got any tips on removal of the starter motor for the series
2 coupe, (1971), I bought a high gear replacement and the
instructions just say ‘‘remove original starter’’! The problem is
everything is in the way both from the top or the underneath of the
car, and there is very little room to swing a ratchet or a
ring ‘‘spanner’’ to remove the two bolts holding the original
starter!! To make matters worse the old bolts are REALLY tight,
(probably has rusted threads!!)I did remove the air tank for the
brake booster, but it doesn’t help.
Thanks–

Yup! This job is not fun anyway you slice it. It is a challenge to
wiggle it through the frames and out the front. If I remember
correctly, I removed the radiator and pulled it out the front.
Or, this is probably less painful, remove the intake manifold. The
original starter weighs a ton. Use a uni-wiggle to get at the
bolts, I trust you know they are easier to get to from inside the
car.–

Rumor has it that Wm. Lyons hung the starter
motor from the factory ceiling and built the car
around it…removal is the reverse of assembly :-).

I’m not an S2 expert by any means, but are you
aware of the opening in the transmission tunnel
(right side near firewall) allowing access to the
starter bolt?

No, I wasn’t aware you could get to the Starter bolts from inside
the car, How do I do that? Also, your reference to a uni-wiggle?
are you referring to a ratchet universal joint?–

A Flex head socket will help as well as drilling a hole through the firewall
in the place specified by the Service manuals.

The last time I had to remove mine, I did it without the hole in the
firewall, but it took a lot of patience with the flex head socket.

If the engine anciliary layout is similar to an S1, you can remove
the starter fairly easily by removing the SU overflow pipes,
distributor, oil pressure sender unit, carb. return springs and
engine breather pipe. The starter will come out through the space
above where the distributor was.

Garth.–

Pull off the carpet on the passenger side of the tranny tunnel-
forward of the radio console. There is an access door with (IIRC)
four phillips-head screws.

Here are some pics:

I never went all the way with my starter, once I found that the
source of my starting problems were elsewhere. These photos were just
exploratory. =)–

MANY THANKS TO YOU ALL! I did find the removable plate on the
transmission tunnel under the dash, and I successfully and quickly
removed the lower starter mounting bolt.
I was seriously considering contacting a traveling circus and
asking if I could hire a very small build contortionist!!
This hidden plate must have been a boon to the dealerships, (which
I am sure they kept secret for as long as they could!) without
knowing about it, removing the lower bolt seems impossible,
(without moving the engine forward…yuk, I don’t want to even
think about that!)
I did note from the pix that some of you sent that there is a
considerable difference between the S1 and S2, and I understand now
that the ‘‘rumor’’ regarding building the car around the starter
motor is closer to the truth than I thought!
Thanks again…have a ‘‘virtual beer’’ on me!–

You’re lucky, you have an acess plate in the right hand footwell adjacent to the
starter. It makes it much easier to get the bolts off.

I replaced my old starter with a reduction gear unit two weeks ago.

I managed to remove the top nut with a small 9/16’’ open ended
spanned, working from the top of the engine. Fiddly, but not
difficult.

To get at the bottom nut, I jacked up the front of the car about
4’’, crawled underneath and used a socket with a UJ coupling and an
18’’ extension. You need this to give plenty of clearance around
the bell-housing to operate the ratchet.

Then I removed the air intake and filter, and the oil filter, and
backed the old starter out. No need to remove the road wheel.

The new starter, being about half the size and weight (only 4.05 kg
according to my wife’s digital kitchen scales) was much easier to
put back. Didn’t even need to remove the oil filter (which I had
replaced as soon as the old starter was out).

The nuts went on exactly the same way they came off. The new
starter had studs fitted, which were actually about 1’’ too long and
not threaded all the way, so I fitted a couple of spacers to take
up the slack.

I have to say that, after all the frightening stories I’d read on
this forum, it was actually an extremely simple job!–

I wonder if the original engineering of the E-type was directed toward
right hand drive. I realize Lyons was relying on the need for U.S.
dollars to keep his company afloat thus necessitating left hand drive
models for export. Is it possible that the starter is much more
accessible with RHD? Just a thought.

Surely the only real difference with a rhd car, as far as accessing
the starter motor is concerned, is that the steering column is in
the way, making it more difficult, not less. However, I didn’t
really find it a problem (although I have to admit I’ve got
realtively small hands!)–
