[E-Type] Steering column length

In reply to a message from John North sent Tue 9 Dec 2014:

I have separated the lower shaft on an S3 which looks
identical to an S2.

With the upper end in a vice horizontally, I tapped (hit)
the edge of the lower and moved the two halfs apart. There
was some rust sticktion and interference fit of the two
parts but they did come apart.

I cleaned the male end tapped the male end back in until
the original holes for the plugs aligned and fitted
replacement plugs I made fron cut and filed down uk style
plastic number plate screws.

If you hit something hard enough to warrant moving these
two shafts the force required to shear theses two small
plugs would not be an issue. In reality the plugs don’t do
a lot as the interference fit was sufficient to hold them
together and the shafts are held to length by the
positioning of the uj’s at either end. IIRC the dia of the
plugs is something like 1/8’’
