[E-Type] Steering Rack Mounts

I am considering replacing my stock steering rack mounts with solid
billet mounts from CJ. Any comments. Pros and cons.

What are you hoping to gain from that, other than a
little ‘‘bling’’ under the ol’ bonnet?–

Mark, unless you’re racing the car, the stock, good-condition
mounts are quite up to the task. The solid ones just won’t buy you
anything much in the way of increased steering response, but WILL
gain you a harsher feel thru the wheel.–

Mark

Polyurethane mounts are available which might be a sensible mid
point between standard and solid.

A certain well know supplier US supplier told me that their solid
mounts were fine for the street. All I can say is that you must
have much better roads over there than we have in England.

Hi Everyone. I am persistently getting my 69 OTS ready for the road
again. I am going to be putting in new upper/lower Ball Joints,
outer Tie Rods/boots and noticed that the Rack Mounts are a lil
tired as well, so, time to replace. There appears to have been
quite a lot of discussion regarding rack mounts over the last
several years. My 69 is manual not power steering. Has there ever
been a definitive answer as to which Rack Mount to use. The Jag
Dealer I use has both OEM and an aftermarket available. I noticed
that there appear to be others available as well. I use the car as
a road car, not a Salom Event car.–

I recently changed from the standard mount to the polybush. I
prefer the more positive steering and don’t notice any difference

When my rack mounts started to de-bond, I welded a strip of steel
at each edge and made them solid. I never did like the mushiness
the originals allowed, but I’ve been happy with the solid metal
mounts for the last 15 or more years they’ve been welded.–

After only 5 years I had one OEM mount fully delaminate and
the other delaminate about 1/4 of the rubber/metal
interface.

So I replaced them with Ray Livingston’s solid mounts. They
fit perfectly. The steering is really crisp without any
increase in harshness. I think our high aspect ratio tires
do a pretty good job of absorbing the high frequency
vibrations that you might feel though the steering wheel.
The result is that the hardness of the mount can add feel
and crispness but won’t add harshness.

I’ve no idea if they are still available.

Interesting: my experience, viz, harshness was exactly

harshness all gone. Not at crisp, but entirely liveable.–

Exactly right! Nothing like retro engineering out the development
of a car. Then again some have limited exp. and a set of solid
mounts would be better than a poor set of proper mounts. That said
I will also say that it is rare some 50 years later to see a
completely bad set. Soft yes, but apart–no.–

Andy, My 2 cents worth is buy the upgraded mounts from one of the usual suspects

Wiggles, You know very well that I am not politically correct (if you are not
Right, you are by definition wrong) and, most likely, not corporately correct
either :-). I think that it would be a good idea for each poster to include
language to that effect with every post in order that no list members panties
get in a bunch.

Restoring my Jag for many years now & have also upgraded to
polybush steering mounts. I originally put in OEM mounts but
remembering that the old ones ‘‘parted’’ and seeing the polybush in
the Barratt catalogue, changed over to these. Cannot yet give
a ‘‘drive’’ opinion but can make one suggestion & that is to ensure
you use the parts manual & the service manual & mount the rack
correctly. I found it incredibly complicated ensuring all bolts,
washers, nuts & spacers are correctly put together. Yes you can
mount it missing a few parts but again, highly recommend you follow
the manuals. I was amazed over how many small attachment parts were
missing.–

Right with ya,George C. I have now had two sets of mounts (in 37
years), snd both were very satisfactory from a crispness and
feedbackpoint of view. I drive the heck out of this car at all
times.

If’n it ain’t broke…

I think Stephen has a point, how many good quality replacements
have been actually installed properly with all required parts
properly adjusted? With the ‘‘holder’’ bolts in place and done
right, I don’t think ‘‘separation’’ would be likely, or maybe even
possible.

Why not just leave it, well, an E Type?

Mine are OEM too, probably the second set, bought new from
Jaguar around 1976 and installed at that time. I think the
steering is just fine and there’s no de-lamination of the
rubber yet.

The only problem I had was with the original MOT test
mechanic back in England when I initially got the car
certified for the road. He failed the car due to the rack
moving back and forth. After a bit of explaining, my proving
that the mounts were brand new and pointing out the safety
bolts, he changed his mind and passed it.–
