I’ve still got a light but annoying steering shimmy that
shows up around 60 MPH.
The entire suspension (ball-joints, upper tables) and tie
rods have been renewed. Wheels balanced and rotated.
The only thing I can think of is the steering rack bushing
that has a very slight play in it.
Would that higher speed shimmy be a symptom if it needed
replacing?
Thanks.

John,
The shimmy comes from some kind of imbalance in the wheels
or brakes, bushings can amplify it or allow you to feel it,
but can’t be responsible for it.
I had the same symptom at the beginning of our recent tour.
I had the front wheels balanced twice at two different
capable shops, no change. I had swapped wheels front to
back preparing for the tour, and the last shop pointed out a
little wobble in one front wheel. Perfect balance but still
a shimmy at about 60. So, I swapped the front wheels back
to the rear, smooth as silk.
So, I need one wheel trued, but putting that wheel on the
rear damped out the wobble.
Try swapping wheels one at a time front to back, and see
whether that improves things. If so, take the possibly
wobbly wheels to a wire wheel specialist (if you can find
one) to be trued. That’s what I will do.

A shimmy at 55-60 MPH is an indication of tire ballance. So if you can’t find anything else, recheck for that or a wheel out of round.

John, I have the same issue but on my car I’m down to the steering
rack as the problem. I can grab the right steering rod and wiggle
it in the bushing. At 60 or so it starts and I cant transition out
of it at higher speed, Hope you can fix your shimmy by balancing.

You should know that there is one other thing that will
cause these symptoms. If the safety bolts for the steering
rack are
too tight, this will not allow the rubber mounts to do their
job. The washers under these bolts must be loose enough that
you can move them by pushing sideways on them…–
