[E-Type] Stipteeze on my 1963 OTS

The restoration is underway, Looking for a good way to strip off
the old paint and undercoat: #1 looking at DRYICE blasting
$3000.00,#2 Soda ash $1000.00, #3 media blasting strip did not get
a quote.

Leaning toward soda ash they mix it with water when blasting any
thought will is work can I nutralize all of the soda and will this
come back to haunt me later with rust popping out any advice will
be great.

I wouldn’t want any leftover corrosive material lurking in all of
the crooks and cranies of mine. Soda Ash is a mild base material. I
use it to neutralize strong acids. Not sure if just a water rinse
would completely nuetralize it. I’d vote for plastic media. Just my
opinion.

Good Luck–

Open mouth, insert foot.
After some research I’ve changed my mind. Soda Ash(sodium carbonate)
is water soluble with a PH of 8.2 It was the blast media used to
refurbish the Statue of Liberty. Seems it’s excellent for striping
painted surfaces as well as removing dirt, grease, and grime all in
one step. Some good info at http://www.p2pays.org/ref/04/03286.pfd--

I was looking at the same process, I am not speaking from
experience but I have been warned that the residue ‘‘Lurks’’ in nooks
& cranny’s and comes back to get you. I was advised Plastic media
blasting is the way to go.

Vince,
Are you going to do the painting yourself? If you are going to have
it done why not ask them for advice? Mine was media blasted and that
is the way I would go assuming the blaster knows what their doing.
Cheers,
Lynn
