[E-Type] Stone guards - painted or plain, if painted - what color?

Team,
I am slowly but surely working my way thtough the big pile of parts
to strip/restore. The engine bay has the 2 stone guards - one for
each side of the bottom of the engine bay. Are they to be cleaned
to bare aluminum? Or painted? If painted, what color? My car is
a '62 3.8 OTS.
Thanks!–

I don’t think you can go wrong with the sort of semi-glossy black but it
has to be applied properly.

There must be runs and drips.

Seriously, most of the one’s I’ve seen were that crappy black paint that
Jag loved so well.

In reply to a message from George Cohn sent Sun 26 Mar 2006:

That ‘‘crappy black paint’’ seems to wipe off with water and looks
like it was ‘‘spit’’ on. I have one panel in the crappy black, and
one that was at some point bare aluminum - but a previous owner
chose to spray it liberally with spray-on undercoating… the gooo
that covered most of my car’s underside, engine compartment, and
seemingly every nut and bolt that I wanted to touch. I have now
stripped off all that gooo from most of the car. Good news: I have
virtually no rust on a CA original OTS… Bad News: That goo it
quite a mess. Guess I’ll go for the medium gloss black on the
redo… by the way, I have found that Rustoleum’s ‘‘Industiral
Quality’’ paint in Black gives that ‘‘not quite glossy’’ black finish
that so many parts seemed to have. My only hesitation in this case
was that I have seen a couple eTypes with bare aluminum stone
guards…–

I hesitate to reply as mine are later, however on the '68 they were
black. If you do paint them, you will need to use a self-etching
primer or you will have adhesion problems. As George C. pointed out,
Sir William had two favorite colors, a glossy black that had to be
applied while intoxicated and a battleship grey that protected the
metal about as well as it protected HMS Hood. The Grey was use on the
interior and the black every thing else

Tom, If you don’t want to worry about chips, gas or oil spills,
consider having them powder coated, it’s pretty much forever

A good resource for answering this type of question is the
JCNA judging guide. So far there are guides for the S1 and
the S2. I think you can download them in .pdf format at the
JCNA site.–

On my '62 they were originally black but mostly flaked off.

I stripped them, cleaned them up with Alumiprep to remove a
few corrosion marks and left them shiny bare aluminum. I
think they look much better that way and they’ve stayed
clean for years.

As for concours or originality, I wouldn’t bother too much.
When I first entered the car in JCNA Championship, the
engine compartment received a perfect score.–

My 66 FHC has both stone guards and all the aluminum pieces underneath bare,
unpainted metal. This is a one-owner car I bought in 1969 with 30K original
miles on and it was in pristine condition.

I’m not sure they were his favorites. I think that being frugal, IE
downright cheap, he got a bargain on a couple of surplus train tank
loads of each.

The grey varied in shade from time to time so he must have run out of
the first tank car full. With the black, it was hard to tell.

But yes, anything that wasn’t oogly grey was oogly black, probably
applied with a water pistol from 10 feet away.

My '63 fhc is believed by those who have looked to be original
35,000 miles. My guards do not have any apparent residual paint,
only bare aluminium. I suppose that they could have been stripped,
however the picture frame and firewall are still original color
even though the body has been color changed to red with the
underside of the bonnet painted black.–

In reply to a message from Randy Brand sent Mon 27 Mar 2006:

I bought my 1966 OTS when it was 5 years old, from the
original owner. All of the stone/mud guard aluminum panels
at the bottom of the engine compartment were painted black -
and they were seedy enough for me to believe that they were
all original. Around 1982, I ordered some replacements for
these aluminum panels from Jaguar - they also came in black,
in the Jaguar (sorry, Leyland) parts boxes. I very much
doubt that Jaguar would have specified bare aluminum panels
in these areas.–
