[E-Type] SU Conversion & Head Coolant Plugs

Hi All,
I am putting 3.8 style SU’s on my 1969 4.2, and I need to block off
the two round coolant passages on the intake side.

Does anyone know where to source the brass plugs or other another
suitable solution? Alternatively, the size and thread pitch of the
OEM part might be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Dave,
Just use cup-type freeze plugs, and J-B Weld them in place. I
did this to a friends 4.2 several years ago, and it’s held up
perfectly. Just clean the bores really well first to get all
traces of grease and oil off, then scuff them up with emery cloth
or a wire brush to give it a little ‘‘tooth’’. I cleaned them up
with a small rotary wire wheel in a drill.–

Ray - thanks for the reply.
Doesn’t your 3.8 have screw in brass plugs?
I think Dan M. told me they are no longer available, so the freeze
plugs may be my only real option.

That would be quite a large NPT tap to buy IF I could find brass
plugs. Might cost more than the carbs!

Dave,
Yes, the 3.8 head has pipe plugs threaded in there, but I don’t
see any reasonable way to do that on the 4.2 with the head in-
situ. I don’t even know for sure the holes are an appropriate
size. They may be bored out larger than those plugs. If you care
about appearance, maybe you could machine down some threaded plugs
so they’ll press into the holes. Once installed, nobody would ever
know the difference.–
