[E-Type] SU dashpot question

I have a tri carb setup off of a 64 that I parted out in the early
80’s. I thought that I’d finish rebuilding it and find that for some
reason the dashpots are not the same height and vary from 3.446,3.565
to 3.600. To add insult to injury I’ve got another one around here
that is 3.752. I thought that all HD8’s were basically the same at
least as far as the dashpots went, guess not. Anyone have a similar
experience?

Bob,
Nope, they do come in different lengths - don’t know why. The
taller ones were used on sedans. That’s one of the ways you can
spot sedan carbs being sold as E-type carbs on E-Bay.–

Thanks Bob, another thing to worry about ;_). Were you measuring from the bottom of the bell to the top, or?

Yes , top to bottom sitting on a flat surface measured through the
damper hole.

In reply to a message from Stevenson Robert sent Fri 6 Mar 2009:

If the spread between your tallest and shortest dashpots is under
4mm I have a feeling this might be in the ballpark for
manufacturing variance on a non-critical dimension. Have you got
photos of the 3 tops (sounds like a Tamla Motown group!)?

The damper cap should come down almost to the top of the 45 degree
sloping ‘shoulder’ fillets on the E-type version. Some sedan ones
were quite a bit taller as Ray says but there were others taller
again IIRC. Sounds like yours are at least probably all the same
unless you have a made-up set of two incorrect tall ones from a
sedan, with a single shorty added from somewhere else to make up
the set. Sounds unlikely though if they were on a 64 that came with
triples from the factory.

If it bugs you and all the damper rods are the same length and
code, you could turn or even file the top of the taller ones down a
millimetre or two with no ill effect and get them closer to the
shortest one. You haven’t noticed it until now and nobody else will
in future if you don’t tell them, I bet.

Bob, That’s what I imagined. Is the difference in the height of the damper neck, or the bell?

Hi All
I think you will find the intakes are all the same and they
rise and fall at the same rate and will balance.
Consequently no problems.
