[E-Type] Submersed fuel pump problems with modern replacement

Hi All,

I have a '63 DHC with a submersed fuel pump. Several years ago, I
replaced the original Lucas pump with a modern replacement from
SNG. It fits right into the tank as the original unit. After about
2 years, the pump failed. I bought a new one at that time, which
now failed again after 3 years. Of course, the car is only driven
during the summer months so the pump is not operated for about 6
months of a year.
Now that the second pump failed, I called SNG and asked if they had
heard about the pump problem before. The answer is ‘‘No’’.

I researched other suppliers online and found that two vendors
supply a ‘‘in-tank pump’’ for about double the price that SNG
charges.
Does anyone have similar experience with the SNG pump or does
someone know if the more expensive product is of different design?

Thanks

Stephan–

Stephan,

No, I have had my SNG pump in tank for about 9 years, no problems.
I do carry a spare just in case. No idea about replacements…

I have had my SNG pump in my car for about 4 years and so far no
problems. I know that it is based on the XJ6 pump with the flange
fitted.
The XJ6 version is cheaper because it comes without the flange so I
guessing you could buy one of those and fit it to the flange of one
of your existing pumps.

Hi Dave,
As I have never even seen an XJ6 fuel pump, I take it from you post that it must be submersed similar to the S1 E’s?

Just for reference, I recently had the original submersed pump in
my 64 Ser I fail. I removed, dissembled and inspected it, found
the brushes intact, and visited a local generator/starter shop who
sanded smooth the commutator contacts (sectioned copper segments)
and scratched clean the gaps-charged me $10. Pump now works
beautifully.

The disassembly and assembly was straightforward compared to many
tasks (e.g., rear brake calipers!)on an e-type!

Maybe worth a try.

Stephan, I bought a submerged pump from a shop in northwest U.S.
for about $230. It had the flange and came with a seal. Works fine.

Hi All,

based on your comments, I have to assume that this was just bad
luck on my side. One final thought I have though: I am using fuel
stabilizer for the winter break, perhaps that interacts with the
pump internals…? Just a WAG…

Thanks again

Stephan,

Even something that is 90% reliable fails 10% of the time –
twice? That’s worse, of course, but I think it’s worth trying
again.

I think the original pump might be easily fixable except for
sourcing new gaskets. There’s not much to them really. I was
discussing this a while ago with Dick V. and he was
intending to make new gaskets from a suitable thickness of
sheet rubber, I think. (They are square section gaskets.)

I ended up installing a modern SU in the right fender well,
like the later cars, but after I’d done that, I managed to
find a NOS in-tank pump, brand new and never run.

I think an XJ6 pump may work at a higher pressure but that
can be adjusted via a screw on the bottom of the pump.–

In reply to a message from Clive Wilkinson sent Tue 3 Mar 2009:

I had a similar experience with a replacement submersible pump from
XKs. It worked well for about two years. The pump itself looks
like a Chevrolet Vega fuel pump fitted to a Jaguar flange/frame
assembly. I replaced the pump with a 1976 Vega fuel pump (Delphi
part FE0002, about $32.00 from Rock Auto). The fuel strainer had
to be salvaged from the old unit, but everything else was pretty
much drop-in. This has been working well for 4 years. The
pressure is a bit high for SUs, so I installed a pressure
regulator.–

Hi Larry,

From the one I saw a few years ago at SNGB its exactly the same the
only difference was the plate which secures the pump to the E-Type
fuel tank the XJ doesn’t need that plate.
