[E-Type] Swapping oil pans

Hi All,

This is regarding my Mk 2 engine and am asking these
questions on the E type forum also. I need to change the oil
pan on my 3.8 (XK 150)engine to gain access for my steering
box. I found an aluminum pan with the recess for the
steering box as my old pan did not have that recess.

I have a few questions about this project:

What sealant do I use on the gaskets?

How is the suction tube secured in the oil pump.

How do I ensure a good fit of the suction tube in the
baffle/filter basket?

Many thanks,

Depends on which gaskets…for the original style, I always used a
coat of Hylomar on each side.

‘‘How is the suction tube secured in the oil pump?’’

Press fit by way of the O-ring in the pump body. Should stay just
fine by itself. Just test fit it first!
DO NOT use silicone here!!!

This a tuffie: One cannot see it so one has to know (in a Zen way)
what it feels like when the oil PU is securely fitted into the
basket. Can’t tell you here, Grasshopper, no matter HOW much
Schmedley-style hand waving I do!–

Wigler,

I was thinking of getting Cometic gaskets. Do they need
sealant? Do the front and rear seals get sealant also?

Thanks for your comments,

Shell!
Questions about the rear seals:
I also put a small amount around the rear seals, lasted 10 years
now with no leaks.

As I understand it, Cometic gaskets need no sealant.
As for the front and rear seals, that all sorta depends on what
style seals we’re speaking of: Early front seals, I’d use the
barest film of silicone arond the periphery (NOOO! This WILL NOT
cause the dreaded, overreported silicone ‘worm’) and then some
Hylomar along the woodruff key/spacer sealing surface; the rear
rope seals I’ll nuse a dab of silicone between the halves, once
properly fitted.–

Walter,

Was that Haylomar you used on the rear seal?

Thanks,
