Anyone help point me toward a replacement tach lens? This is
a 5’’ glass lens. I have spent nearly three hours searching
the archives and internet to no avail, maybe I am not
looking in the right places. thanks for suggestions.

Hi Bruce,
You might try a glass shop, I had one made several years ago
for the speedo for my '73.
Cheers,

Or just buy yourself a Series 1 XJ6. You’ll get the lens,
plus have a spare (from the speedo), both for a paltry sum
compared to E-type valuations.
Tight on space to store the XJ6? Get the tach from Ebay, or
from an XJ vendor such as David Boger at EverydayXJ.com.–

Go to any glass shop. They will cut you one. Get three
while you’re there, I need two :-)–

Exactly, and you avoid the potential of breakage during
shipping.
Even Lowes and Home Depot sell glass but I don’t think they
will have the capacity to cut circular pieces. You need a
shop that does residential windows and commercial
storefront type work.–

Go to any glass store and ask for a piece of single strength glass,
whatever diameter you need. They will probably cut it while you wait.

Glass is pretty easy to cut.
Start by finding a picture frame with the right thickness.
You can rough cut glass under water with a pair of stout
scissors, but getting an accurate shape isn’t easy. To get a
better circle make a beam compass to hold a normal glass cutter
(Min is a hockey puck, a roller skate bearing, some ground rod
and a clamp to hold the cutter). Scribe the Diameter,
crisscross the corners out and using flat faced pliers, nibble
away the outside areas. Since you don’t need a perfectly round
glass with a smooth ground edge your rough cut blank should not
need any additional work. If your blank does have a high spot
you can file it down by hand with a glass file (i.e. a
carborundum stone). I used to make (flat) clock glasses all the
time. If you know someone who does stained glass, or tiffany
work they can make one in a short order for you, even smoothing
the edge by grinding (glassworking grinders are water cooled -
a bother to make, and expensive to purchase if you only need a
single blank)

Just a thought. If one was replacing the gauge glass I
wonder if there would be any advantage to using non
reflective glass as the replacement.–

It took me 4 hours to shovel short driveway and the walk to
the front door. Drive mechanism on my snowblower conked out
:>(( Main roads and most side streets have been plowed here
in Northern Virginia, but on my way in to work this morning,
in most places, only one lane in each direction was plowed
on the main roads. Schools will probably be closed all week
because of danger to the buses on the back county roads. DC
is still a mess, no surprise. Federal government, the big
employer and rush hour traffic producer is still closed
today. Metro (subway) close to getting back to normal
operation; above ground stations are still a problem. It’ll
be a couple of weeks before things really get back to
normal. I got 23’’ at my house; Pete probably got around
30’'. I don’t expect to see him before June.–

From what I read on the news it will take Pete a week to shovel a
path from the house to the garage! Hope you guys are all save and
sound.

2 feet of snow throws a wrench in the works even in areas that are
used to it (perhaps less so in the far north), given that Va/Md/DC
are far from used to it, I am sure it will take a while to get
back to normal.
I was in Md for the ‘‘Big storm’’ in 2013/14 and that was only a
small dusting with a bit of a cold snap… can’t imagine what it
must be like right now.
Keep yer stick on the ice!
