[E-Type] Temp Sender problem

My temp gauge has stopped working and I’m trying to trace the problem. I
suspect it’s the temp sender but I’m not sure. Is there an easy way to test
this? Using an ohm meter perhaps?

Thanks,
Ed

Ed,

I tested mine by taking the wire off the sender and grounding it to the
block. If the gauge is working this will cause the needle to peg on the hot
side.

I believe, if you remove the wire at the sender end, short it to
ground and the gage goes to hot, the sender is shot.

Can I add to Ed’s message about the temp sender. Is there supposed to be
voltage going into the sender ( the wire from the gauge to the sender)?
Or is that supposed to be a grounded wire.?-----Original Message-----

Eugene,

It is the ground wire.

If it only has one wire, and most of them do, it goes to the negative
side of the instrument.
As the module heats up the resistance changes reducing the resistance
puts more current through the gauge.
If you put a VM on the wire you will see voltage as it is being fed
through the gauge.
ground the wire and the gauge should go to max.
The usual problem is that the element opens up and the gauge can not see
the ground circuit.–
