[E-Type] Temperature Sender Impedance Profile

I had to replace the temperature sender on my SII OTS
yesterday. I looked on the web for a chart of what the
resistance values were for various temperatures and couldn’t
find one, so I built one. A rough ‘‘rule of thumb’’ can be
given in a few words:

My investigations indicate that the resistance starts out at
about 890 ohms at 40 degrees F and decreases roughly 15 ohms
for every increase of 5 degrees F. These were taken by
immersing a new sensor in a tub of mineral oil along with a
type K thermocouple, with the thermocouple connected to one
DMM (digital multimeter) and the sensor to another DMM. The
tub of oil was chilled in an ice bath and hot water was
added to the bath in small increments to bring the
temperature up.

Just thought someone else could use this data. Note that if
you’re doing this in the car, you MUST disconnect the sender
from the dash gauge. This was done at home using a lash-up
rig. If anyone has a better chart or whatever, post it!–

Rick, Can you tell us exactly what the sender was: brand
name or source?–

That doesn’t really agree at all with all the measurements I’ve
take over the years on a number of senders. Nominal resistance, at
70C should be close to 70 ohms. At normal room temp - 20C - about
300-330 ohms. At 110C, about 10-11 ohms. My values also agree
with what I’ve been able to learn about the calibration instrument
Lucas sold for these gauges (these show up on E-Bay once in a
while).–

The part was purchased from XKS Unlimited, part number C16895.
Again, my chart was based on the lashed-up lab setup I
described. YMMV, as they say.–

I’ll go back over my data and do the conversions to Celcius.
I also quoted from memory which I shouldn’t do since I
suffer from CRS (can’t remember s***) syndrome. Let me dig
up the charts I built and get back to the forum.–

Rick,

If you haven't installed it in the car yet, you may be in for a

rude surprise. Many of the new senders being sold are GROSSLY out
of calibration. I’ve heard people who found their new senders
reading off by 10-20C.–
