[E-Type] Thus Spoke Zara

Never mind… A few weeks ago, I was driving the Jag, and
got a rather sudden flat on the right rear. I put on the
spare, and proceeded home, whereupon I put air in the flat
tire, and found it leaking out at a prodigious rate through
the bead! Today I finally got around to dis-mounting it, and
found the explanation - a broken short spoke. The ‘‘usuals’’
seem to either not sell these, or have them as ‘‘special order’’
items. Anyone know where I can buy a few? Our local wire-
wheel guy, John Blake formerly of British Wire Wheel, seems to
have gone missing of late…–

Ray is it Dayton or Dunlop? Dunlop spokes can be had but unless you
have a very old account with Dayton they will not sell spokes. Best
of luck. BWW is gone–try Hendrix.–

I also just looked at the new Vredesteins I just received.
Incredibly, the date code indicates 8/2013 manufacture date,
and I received them on 8/7! They must have been manufactured
practically the day before they shipped! Got them from
vulcantire.com - $700 for four, including shipping. Not
cheap, but by far the cheapest I could find.–

Ray, I ran into the same problem, broken spokes, on one of my
wheels when I bought my car. I couldn’t find individual
replacement spokes either, so I bought a junker wheel that was
missing a few spokes and used a couple of its spokes as
replacements on my wheel. Let me know what length that you
need and if I have what you need, I would be glad to send a
couple to you. My donor wheel is a curly hub.–

I assume the wheels are Daytons, but don’t actually know for
sure. They are modern, non-sealed (well, from the factory - I
sealed them myself…), tubeless wheels.–

Mark,

Mine are curly hub. The broken one is one of the short ones -
about 4.5’', more or less. These are stainless, as the wheel
is, AFAIK, a Dayton. Is that what you have?–

Ray,

I had a couple of broken spokes on my 1969 E-Type FHC shortly after
purchasing it in 2002 and sent all five original wheels to John Blake for a
tune and true and replacement of a few more spokes. The replacement ones
he used were stainless steel, but you really can’t tell which one they are.
He was great to deal with, and I have had no wheel issues since then.

Here’s the latest info I have on John Blake, but I haven’t had any contact
in several years: J B’s Wire Wheels, 1770A Jose Avenue, Santa Cruz, CA

Ray if you send your spoke to Buchanan Spoke in California they will
make you a new spoke or as many as you need. www.Buchananspoke.net

I have a couple of the short inside spokes for a series 2 wheel.

I have a collection of spokes/nipples but original chromed type
from the newer forged hub wheel. Measure the length of what you
need and if it’s the same I’ll be happy to fire off a few in the
mail.

vis new Vreds I paid $789 for five including shipping from Eurotire
