[E-Type] timing chain adjustment help needed

I have the head torqued down, cams set with the alignment key and torqued to
spec. I’m trying to adjust the tension on the timing chain… I can get bolts
in both of the visible holes in the cam timing chain sprockets… When I
adjust the chain I can get the exhaust side nice and tight but the intake side
has lots of slack in it still
With just one chain adjustment, what am I missing here?

I’m also confused where the rotor should be facing with the engine at TDC. I
figure it would be facing #6 on the cap(away from the engine). Or should it be
facing #1 (towards the engine)
The foremost cylinder is #6, correct?

thanks guys,

Michael

Got one answer for you…
With pistons 1 and 6 at TDC, where you insert the distributer depends on how the
cams are facing. If your cam notches are up (needed for the timing adjustment),
then number 6 is fireing. The rotor should be pointing front. Number 6 is front, 1
in rear; and according to the manual, when 6b fires the rotor is pointing toward
the front of the car.
If this is wrong, please someone let me know.
As for timing chain tension, let me (us) know what that solution is, as I’ma
about to that point myself.

Hi, Michael – hope you had a happy holiday.
Seems like you are making progress, too!

Well, it seems to me that you need to adjust the sprockets
again. The only way you’ll get the slack out of one side
without moving either the cams or the crank is to let that
sprocket shift around while the cam stays still. In other words
you have to have all the top chain slack out before you set the
cam timing.

  • Unbolt and pull out the center adjusting disks from both sprockets
  • Tighten up the chain tension, letting the sprockets move
to get all the slack out of both sides. Too tight and you’ll pull the
sprockets off of the camshafts. But no slack.
  • Make sure cams and crank are aligned again
  • Re-insert the splined disks into the cam sprockets so the
    bolts line up again.

I’m available when I get free time to come help out again…
