[E-Type] Tire Replacement

In reply to a message from Rod Fisher sent Thu 17 Jul 2008:

Rod,
I never got the 3M tape, but if I ever do it again, I will.
Here’s what I did:

  1. Clean the entire inside of the rims really well - wire brush,
followed by several wipe-downs with a good solvent, like Mineral
    Spirits, brake cleaner, etc.
  2. Apply a coat of Polyurethane caulk (available from any hardware
store or home center) over the center spoke nipples, completely
covering them. Immediately cover that with several layers of good
quality eletrical tape. Stretch the tape so it goes on smooth, and
majke sure it’s stuck down really well. Cover the entire ‘‘flat’’
section in the center of the wheel.
  3. Do the same for the outer spoke nipples, using just enough caulk
to cover the nipples. When you apply the tape, start at the outer
bead, and make sure there are no wrinkles in the tape. Overalap
each pass 30-50% over the previous pass, and go ‘‘around the corner’’
on the rim, going past the bead seat, and partway down the ‘‘step’’
in the rim. The tire will have to slide over the tape here, and
it’s important there is nothing it will ‘‘catch’’ on.
  4. Leave the wheels alone for about 24 hours, until the caulk has
cured. After that, go ahead and mount your tires.
Mine have been this way for about a year now, with two different
sets of tires on, and I’ve mounted and dismounted most of them
several times now. Each time the tire is dismounted, you’ll need
to remove an re-apply the tape on the outer bead, so plan on
carrying a roll of electrical tape in your toolkit. I also carry a
tube of the caulk in my boot, just in case.–
