About a year ago, I completed a complete restoration on my '65
OTS. Shortly after I bagan driving it last spring, the speedometer
stopped working. Just recently, I sent the speedometer to
Nissonger, who had rebuilt it for me during the restoration. I
just spoke with Nissonger, and they said my speedometer was full of
transmission fluid. He said the speedometer cable works like a
little oil pump and pumps transmission oil right through the angle
drive, up the cable, and into the gage. He suggested that there
must be a seal at the transmission to prevent the oil from
escaping. This seal would have to be in the transmission, where
the angle drive attaches.
Does anyone have any experience with this problem? Did I leave out
a seal when I rebuilt the transmission? Could the seal have
deteriorated this quickly? Is this something that can be repaired
without taking the transmission out of the car? Thanks for any
help you can give me.
