[E-Type] Trouble installing belt on Series I

In reply to a message from ex jag sent Wed 20 Feb 2013:

I’ll be trying that approach next time Joel.

The service manual indicates no problems installing the belt, and
warns against using any tools to install it. However, this applies
to the earliest cars, with a large generator adjustment and no
tensioner so it’s different for later 3.8s. My guess about those
who have relatively easy installation is that they have 4.2 cars,
with alternators and a different setup, as well as a larger belt.
Can’t say. Bob’s '64, I don’t get that.

But it does make sense that it would be easier to get the belt onto
the tensioner pulley than the generator where there is a 120 degree
turn.

it would
just slide?
G’Day fj40,
Yes, ‘slipping’ on other pulleys is irrelevant until the tensioner is in
place and alternator is levered out along the adjuster arm, if it then still
slips at maximum adjustment the belt is too long/large :-)) You can buy
sticky stuff (liquid) for belts to stop slipping, we used it regularly in
the old factory in my youth where most machines were run from same motor via
belts coming down from an overhead pulley system, long gone now. It is
still used here in some sheep shearing sheds where each shearer still hooks
up to an overhead drive system running the length of the shed.

ok. finally got it on… Basically, since we had car up on
stands, we got it started on the crank pulley. (we tried to
get it over completely but impossible). The crank at the
advantage of not moving, unlike the generator pulley. Then
bumped the starter and boom, done. Just like that.

I did not do the screwdriver trick since we were not sure
exactly where it would go and the thought of a screwdriver
flying out seemed a bit dangerous… I would love to see a
video of it… It pretty much stayed there when it was about
a third on the crank pulley. I had someone push the
pensioner pulley while we got it started by the way.

A note though, you have to be careful not to push the
tensioner too much since it can make it more difficult (ie,
keep the belt as straight as possible at it goes over
tensioner).

Thanks all…–

Hi Fj,
Glad you were able to get that belt on, but how the heck are
you going to get one on the car when you are along side the
road? There really isn’t a belt that fits better?
Cheers,

Lynn,

The same way I did at Mesa Verde on the SOL… I used a
screwdriver. Really no big deal. I have used a bigger belt;
result: slippping of the generator pulley at night with the lights
on (after a few thousand miles), and the tensioner fully extended
with the effect in my case of having the belt cause a worn-through
hole (with leak) in the bottom coolant hose.

Interesting that it was not possible to get the belt installed on
the three driving/driven pulleys even with the tensioner out of the
way. So I guess the technique in the service bulletin is
like ‘‘reinstallation is the reverse of removal’’
– Shyeah, riiiiight!

Thanks Jerry,
Still doesn’t seem to me that it should be such a thrash, but
then again I have been spoiled by the very rare S 1.5

Joel,

It’s in 2014, as of now March 24-28th. Sorry the years don’t
match! It would have been great to get some more JCNA people on
the ride.
