[E-Type] Trunk Lid Shims?

In reply to a message from bobsxke sent Mon 7 Jul 2014:

Changing the shim height under the latch won’t improve the
boot lid fit, it will just prevent the latch from working.

Both height, and pitch angle of the lid front to rear is
adjusted using the two bolts that hold the hinge arms to the
brackets bolted onto the boot lid.

If the lid is still too low on maximum adjustment (doesn’t
sound to be your problem) then shims can be put between the
brackets and the underside of the lid to lift it up.

Correct adjustment takes time and patience, and is best
achieved IMO with the boot seal OFF. Sometimes final
adjustment may require you to very carefully bend the boot
lid lip in one area if the lid profile doesn’t properly
match that of the body shell. This is a last resort for
correction of small errors only!

Once you have the boot lid height and pitch correct you can
then adjust the latch. Again I have found this easiest with
the lid seal OFF. Put some masking tape on the body lip so
you son’t scratch the paint.

First, mark the fore and aft position of the latch plate in
relation to the boot lid. What I have done is remove all
shims and nip the 4 bolts up then just loosen them a tiny
bit so the latch can move with some pressure applied.
Hopefully this corrects any small errors of positioning when
the latch latches. When you then relaese it it is the
correect place fore and aft and left and right.

Next pull the latch so it slides all the way toward the back
of the boot lid. Close the lid down. Watch to see that the
latch goes down onto the lock mechanism squarely (you can’t
of course see this properly as the latch closes). If it’s
not square correct it so the latch bar hits the lever around
the centre mark of the bar.

See if it latches. It probably won’t. Loosen the 4 bolts and
push a washer between the latch and the boot lid on both
sides, then nip the 4 bolts up again. Rinse and repeat with
extra washers until it latches. Because you have already set
the lid height and pitch correctly with the hinge bolts when
latched it should be pretty much spot on.

Measure the thickness of your washer stack and hey presto
you know the correct shim thickness. Personally I made up a
couple out of 1/2’’ aluminium strip of the correct thickness.
Or you can just put the correct number of washers on the
bolts between the latch and the bonnet.

Now reinstall the boot seal.–

Question, where can he acquire the appropriate metal shims to
set this up the correct way?
