[E-Type] Turn signal Series 1

Thanks for everyone’s help on the wheelarch covers and the photos
sent off-list. I think I have an idea of what goes where. Now I
just have to find/make it. I didn’t win the S3 panel Ebay auction
anyhow, so the issue can go on the back burner for a while.

What I DID win recently, and has just arrived, is a series 1 turn
signal switch and housing. However, I am disappointed to find that
there seems to be no ‘pull’ movement for headlamp flashing,. as
descirbed in my S1 2+2 Owners Manual. My previous S2 switch did
have this, plus of course horn push, but this S1 seems to have no
flash capability. I’m wondering if it’s not an S1 switch at all and
was misrepresented as being E type when in fact it is from another
Jag model or different make of car?

The other puzzling thing is that where it bolts onto the steering
column I’ve only seen them with two tabs to fix the assembly to the
bracket which is part of the outer column. This switch has a
separate semicircular strip to make the full 360 degree clamp and
of course I will not need this part as my column has the bracket as
part of the housing. Again, is this typical for S1 or did the early
ones have the full clamp and they made the tangs on the column
housing from the 4.2 models onwards or something? finally it only
has five wires and mine had 8. Were there any 3.8s with five wires?

Are there any S1s with no pull switch for headlamp flashing? If
not, this guy gets some serious negative feeback and a flea in his
ear from me.–

Peter,

I’m afraid you’ve got the wrong switch.

There should be a flash circuit, and there is no retaining bracket
on an s1.

Hutson have the correct ones at about 80.

Thanks Dennis, but I think we’re getting mixed up here…

The S1 cars ALL have the dip/main (dimmer) on the dash and the horn
in the wheel, no question. I didn’t say anything different. In fact
I didn’t mention the dimmer at all and I only said the horn was on
the stalk for S2 cars (and S3?)

But I’m hearing they all have the flash too, by pulling on the
signal stalk. Maybe you didn’t try that yet or is yours different?–

Uh oh…

I just had a good look at my switch internals…

The alloy chassis is stamped 10 58 under the grime on one arm.

So either I have the earliest prototype gleam in the E-type
production engineer’s eye (yeah, right) or we’re talking about a
switch from another car entirely, 2.5 years before the first ‘E’
was unveiled at Geneva.

Let’s hope I get some satisfaction from this source who has triple-
digit feedback ratings on Ebay. Will bring it back to the US with
me in December and ship it up to NY for him to change.–

Peter

This sounds all OK as far as I can remember my car has this type of signal
switch. It’s a '62 3.8 FHC.

I suppose they go high beam—and they stay on as long as I keep the handle
pulled back.
