[E-Type] Unilite Distributor Dog

I just installed the new Unilite, all I need to do is time it and
lock it down (I have it running roughly). In the process I had to
drill out the new shaft to set a pin that holds on the new drive
dog, running perpendicular through it. Said dog has two ears that
look just a little off center, if one looks at the end of the
shaft. Is this supposed to be this way? I looked into the block
and it seems more centered than the ears are on the distributor.
The whole unit goes into the block and seems to seat (very tightly,
with a little help, I might add) and the housing is very ‘‘stiff’’ in
the seat. Does this need to wear in a bit, or was I sent a faulty
part. I would hate to think of this, in that, the new shaft is
drilled now for the new dog and would be a PITA to re-do. Thanx,

Huff,
Yes, the ‘‘ears’’ on the drive dog are very slightly offset -
just enough so it can only go in one way. I don’t know why they
made it that way, but I’ve taken several apart, and they’re all
like that. The other odd thing is the retaining pin is also offset
slightly. Maybe it’s just sloppy machining…–

When installing a new ‘‘dog’’, it’s VERY important to get the dog and
rotor alligned exactally as they were on the original distributor.
If it’s off, you’ll have trouble getting the ign. timing correct
and the wires must be moved around.
