[E-Type] Upholstery help please

I am in the process of starting to install the headliner material
to the area above the ‘crash rolls’ and below the headliner itself.
the area above the rear hatch has a metal plate attached with 7
screws and has several teeth that the material is to catch on. The
material has a rubber tube sewn into it’s edge that is stuffed
between the headliner and the leading metal edge. Question 1. Is
the edge that hooks onto the teeth placed first then the metal
strip screwed in tightly and then stuff the rubber tube edge in
place? Question 2. If the rubber tube edge is placed first how is
the material placed into the teeth of the metal plate if the metal
plate is screwed tightly?

This is on a 1970 2+2.

Thanks for any help. Joel.–

Hi Joel

Did this not long ago with my 70 2+2. The two metal plates
are screwed on first, the edge of the material with the
rubber roll is installed all around the roof and then at the
back with the help of a putty knife or a thin wooden
spatula, the wool material is pushed between the teeth and
the roof of the car. Be sure NOT to trim too much off at
the outside corners where the metal pieces curve downward.
I had to do a small repair there. Some adjustment of the
fit of the toothed sections and the roof may be required.
Once the material is pushed in the teeth prevent it from
pulling out again.
Also, make sure you leave enough material to trim around the
interior light that goes in the middle between the two
toothed metal pieces.

Cheers.

Hi, Joel and Joe. I’m trying to figure out this same job. I have a 1971 SII FHC. My car was disassembled when I bought it, so I have no guide. Do you recall:

  1. Once I’ve installed the two metal strips with teeth that go across the back of the top, between the headliner and hatch opening - do I glue on a layer of foam over the strips before covering the strips with cloth? I don’t see any consistent information on this.
  2. Is there any type of material that goes around the rear hatch opening on the inside, before the strips are installed and covered?
  3. Do the perimeter strips around the right and left sides of the headliner, and the one in front that is removable, get covered with a layer of foam, too, or just the wool cloth?
  4. If foam is used, what thickness?
    THANKS, for your help. Doug

Douglas;

  1. As I remember I covered the strips (not the edge with teeth) with Landau foam (1/8") then pulled the fabric over it and pushed the fabric edge under the teeth with a putty knife.
  2. My car had a vinyl ‘strip’ that went around the entire rear hatch opening after the rest of the interior was completed.
  3. I covered the metal with Landau foam ( a foam with more body then ‘sponge rubber’ foam in my opinion) that I sourced from a upholstery shop. I also sprayed some adhesive on the foam so the fabric would stay in place. Many don’t do this for some reason I just thought it was a good idea.
  4. I used 1/8" landau foam. Used adhesive under the foam and under the fabric.
Most of this I just did, no one told me how but I have in the past watched some upholstery work and just thought what would look the best for the greatest length of time. Time will tell.

Regards, Joel.

Douglas;
I just looked to see where you got my name. Boy that was a long time ago that I asked about the same question. Good work on finding it.
I read the J-L site most every day and if you want to ask by PM or open question doesn’t matter to me. A open question may allow some one else to get their question answered or contribute their opinion and of course you are free to ignore any advice. What a great system.

Regards, Joel.

Thanks, Joel. Very helpful. I appreciate your advice.

Doug

Regarding that plastic strip that goes around the perimeter. I think this part is available and was originally available in at least 2 colors. I had an original one and it was as stiff as a cob. Since my car isn’t a completely stock restoration I used a thick vinyl instead based on others having issues with the stiffness. I’d check with experts on this issue before you proceed. I usually don’t care for non advice advice, but this is just a recommendation that you do some research on this particular part.
