[E-Type] Vacuum Leak

Hi All,

I am convinced now that my brake problem is a vacuum leak. Each time I
depress the pedal and let go I can hear a soft hiss. When I shut off the
car there is a gurgle. The sounds seem to be coming from the brake master
area.

How do I locate this leak or trouble shoot this problem?

Many thanks,

Hi Shelly,
Shelley I’m not sure that what you are hearing may be normal, If someone
else has gone over this then forgive me as I have been spending my time on
the Car and not the computer. When you push down on the brake pedal you are
opening the air reaction valve which then vents the back (next to the
firewall) portion of the booster to atmosphere that then increases the force
being applied to the slave cylinder thus you will hear a hiss each time you
activate the valve until you run out of vacuum in the vacuum tank. You can
go through the system and check all of your hoses, are they in good repair
and are the clamps tight? The next step is to borrow or buy a vacuum gauge,
you can use this to make sure your system is holding a vacuum. On my car I
was able to check the vacuum booster and found that it wouldn’t hold a
vacuum in either the front or back chambers and decided to replace it with a
new unit given the amount of effort it required to pull it out. I’m not sure
what the gurgle is unless there is brake fluid in the booster or vac tank.
Good Luck with your car, hope this is helpful.

By the way, many thanks to those of you that have helped me with advise on
numerous issues including brakes, radio and etc.
Sincerely,

That would be my guess, but I think you’d need a lot
of fluid in the booster to make the thing gurgle??

Les.
