Having a keeper come loose and the valve drop from
continually unkeying is a likely possibility. Shoddy work
is all it is. If you need to patch it to keep from pulling
the head, here are some helpful hints. Realize that these
are only hints after the fact that the head is screwed up.
The valve shim must have contact on the top of the valve
and have a clearance around the edge so it is not also
seating on the collar. You will not know what the
adjustment is if the shim is not sitting on the valve. To
start with, take a shim and grind the lower outside edge so
it will go down into the collar and contact the valve with
room to spare. You can tell when you have ground enough as
the shim will rock on top of the valve. Now measure how far
down it is from the flat shoulder of the collar to the
shim. Compare this to the tappet inner protrusion to make
sure when you put the tappet in place it is sitting on the
shim and not the shoulder of the collar. We have deep
reach tappets if needed for some of the extreme cases. Jaguar Tappets is a picture of the available tappets. Stock XKE is the top left. The one I am referring to is the bottom right in the picture in the article. Now that you have the tappet sitting on the shim and the shim sitting on top of the valve, reassemble and check clearance. You will probably need to take another size shim and bevel the lower edge to get proper clearance. Even with this patch, the engine should perform well and last until the next valve job is needed which from the work performed will probably be sooner than if a proper valve job had been done in the first place.

70/1000). The concern was that the keepers could be knocked
loose and have a valve drop.

Thanks for all the comments and help. Sounds like I have
been running on borrowed time. I was hoping to get some
nice fall drives in yet this year, but will be starting the
winter project early and take the heads in for a rebuild.–
