I have the back halfs of two E-Type roadsters and I’m
wondering if there are any identifying number plates in the
trunk or rear body area that I might be able to find? One is
a Series II OTS tub from sills just behind A piller with 70%
of floor. This one is in pretty good shape. The other is a
rusty and badly dented up Series I OTS tub from the B-post
and rear parcel shelf on back (no part of floor panels).
I was thinking if I could find some ID plates on them I
could enter them as scraped in the database at xkedata.com–

There should be a body number tag riveted to the area that’s normally covered by
the stainless steel plinth on the S2 tub. I think it’s just to the right of the
license plate area if memory serves.

I have identified a few cars that I may be interested in that are located in
Southern California. They are located near San Diego, LA, and San
Francisco. If anyone in those respective areas would be willing to look at
a car for me, please let me know.
I am in the East Bay, bout 15 miles south of Oakland. You mentioned
Southern Cal and then San Francisco, so if one of the cars is in the SF Bay
Area, let me know if i can help you.

Steven,
There is a tag spot welded to the area behind the rear license plate on my ‘67. You would have likely seen that so maybe you don’t have it. I have heard of other locations but not sure of where. Haddocks’ book points out some of the locations to look.

SAo if I provide a body number to JHDT they would not be
able to give me a car number that went with that? I realize
there is no relation directly between the body number & car
number but I’m wondering if there is some sort of database
(other than xkedata.com) where the two could be related.–

Not really, just by approximation.
For example, the body number on my car is 4R8217 and the VIN is 1R13536 so there
is no close correlation.

Nope. The JDHT will only confirm that the numbers you have are complete for
a particular car.
My guess is that they won’t do this to prevent folks from making up a
“matching number” cars from a bunch of bits and pieces or changing the
numbers on a stolen car to one that they can claim is theirs.
Hi Jim,
How you be? I’m in Agoura Hills on the edge of the San Fernando Valley and, depending where in LA (big place) the car(s), are I’d be glad to help. Besides, I owe you one.
I think that I have finally reached a deal with Moss on the MWS wheels along the lines we discussed. Thanks again for your help with the wheels and let me know if I can help you with one or more of the cars. How many are you planning to buy? Regards,
Larry
Hey Jim,
I’d be glad to help also, I’m in Loma Linda near the Riverside / San
Bernardino area if you have any need in this section of SoCal.

Steven,
The data does exist but is held by Jaguar Cars. They will “confirm” the numbers are correct if you provide them (JDHT) but they will not give you or anyone else that info. This is a developement of privacy laws and fraud prevention, it wasn’t that way originally. Think about it; if you provided a gearbox number and they told you all of the associated matching numbers someone could actually create that matching numbers car. There might be multiple cars running around with the same numbers but who would know. What would really be funny is if there were eventually more E-types on the road than were ever producted

This has happened with D-type Jags, at one point there were 3 cars all
claming to be the original and because they did have a part with a serial
number that proved it they would all say they were the REAL one,
