Some like em’ some don’t. I wouldn’t be without one unless I owned
a nice gas analyzer.–

I own one, used it on the Webers, works like they say it does, only good for
setting idle mixture or at least, seeing if the idle mixture is close to
being correct…useful tool IMHO.

Well I’ve find one great for doing the SU’s on my 65 4.2.

It’s come in handy for doing a whole bunch of other engines
including a three cylinder two stroke motorbike.

It does a bit more than just set the idle mixture. If you follow
the charts it’s good for checking out carburation up the range as
well.

I think someone said to check the mixture above idle to get a more
accurate reading. I can’t recall the exact reasons for that but it
worked. It got my engine running better than I’d ever managed to
do by the standard methods.

I think that was me. I adjust the mixture at around 2500 RPM by
getting the flame to look yellow (rich) then backing the mixture
off until it looks blue. That way I’m on the rich side of the blue
range. Then I check it at idle to ensure that it’s not too yellow.

There is some belief that using a Colortune to set the mixture in
your driveway is not indicative of an engine under load so it is
therefore erroneous. There may be some small element of truth to
this, but this is how the shops adjust mixture using their
expensive exhaust analyzers, even many of the state emission test
stations test cars statically.

All I know is that the Colortune made a huge difference in the way
my car performed and it beats the old ‘‘lift and listen’’ methodology
of mixture adjustment all to heck, especially if you have a 4.2
with it’s inherent lumpy idle.–

I have to second Doug’s finding. I bought two colortune plugs and installed
them in the number A2 & A5 cylinders of my V12, and then move them to B2 &
B5. Started with a “bunsun burner” blue flame at idle, then check and
tweeked again at 2000. Ran it up to about 3500 and did not see a
difference. The engine idles very smoothly now, with good crisp throttle
response.

You need to balance the carbs first and I used a unisync to do that. After
balancing the air flow with the unisync, I was advised to install the air
filters before adjusting the jets as the filters would cause the settings to
richen.
