[E-Type] Water temp sensor replacement?

Although I have come to terms with the electrical system on
my SII 2+2 never being fully functional, I’d like it if a
few more of my gauges would work.

Im trying to diagnose what exactly is wrong with my water
temp sensor, and Im pretty sure its the sensor and not the
gauge. As per my shop manual I checked for continuity
between the terminal and the case, and here is where yall
come in. My ohm meter is reading about 90k ohms and Im
wondering if this qualifies as continuous. Also, when the
car is running Im not getting any voltage between the
terminal and a ground. Thanks a lot.–

Kyle,
The temp sender should read around 350 ohms when cold, around
60-80 ohms at normal operating temp. So, sounds like yours is
bad. You can easily test the gauge by simply grounding the wire to
the sender. With the ignition on, the gauge should rise fairly
quickly. Don’t leave the wire grounded for more than long enough
to see the gauge move. If the gauge rises as described, and you
still get no reading with the sender connected, replace the
sender. If it them reads, but not correctly, you may need to check
or replace the instrument voltage regulator, which is the little
rectangular thingie mounted to the instrument panel just above the
oil gauge.–

KoolKat just replace the IVR from CoolCat and is real happy with the product
& newly found accuracy in both the water temp gauge & fuel gauge, nice to
have both working and rock steady readings. Now, doesn’t that feel better?
