Aren’t baulk cut gears cut using some variation of mill? I could have
sworn I’ve seen old assembly line footage where a mill head is pushed
into a stationary gear then the gear is moved and the head moves in again.

You said ‘‘layshaft’’. That’s the shaft the cluster gears ride
on. I don’t make no steenking gears! Though, I’d like to learn to
do that someday. But helical tranny gears? Fuggeddaboutit! Those
are HARD!–

Ooops my bad. I meant the cluster gear of course. By hard do you mean
difficult, or hardened?
