[E-Type] Wheel bearing interchangeability with other Jags

Guys & Gals

Have I wasted a little money winning a eBay set of inner front
wheel bearings to suit Mk1 & Mk 2 2.4-3.8L models? I seem to recall
all XK engined wheel-bearings were pretty similar. In fact up to
and including the 9-5-97 X300 series?–

Most E Type chassis bearings are Timken and easily
obtainable from the nearest bearing supply using the number
on the old one so it’s hardly worth getting them from a
dubious source.

Same thing with seals although you’d probably need to
measure them and note the lip type.

I renewed every bearing on my car and the only difficult one
was one of the big mainshaft bearings in the Moss box.–

Hello Peter,

No, early and later front bearings are not the same.
Earlier front axles were thinner than later front axles
and the bearing ID was changed to reflect that fact.
E-types have the thinner axles.

Curious enough, the bearing OD stayed the same, so
early and later front hubs can be interchanged and some
folks deduct from that fact that the bearings must be the
same too. But that is not so.

I would have to do some research to find out when this change
occurred exactly, but I seem to remember sometime during
XJ-6 Ser 1 to handle the additional weight of the car. For sure
all the XJ-6 Ser 3 have the later, skinnier bearings and the
thicker axles.

Thanks Dick sounds logical enough. But from what you say the E-type
would have been the same ‘skinny’ design as the Mk1 and M2 cars and
therefore my ‘early’ bearings might be OK, whereas late XJ ones
would be different (which is not what I’ve bought)?

As for bearing factors, Clive is right of course and normally I do
purchase from motor or bearing factors. I guess I just got eBay
withdrawal symptoms and couldn’t resist a cheapie…–

Hello Peter,

Sounds like you lucked out. For the E-type the
correct Timken bearings are:

Inner bearing: LM.67048 - LM.67010
Outer bearing: LM.11949 - LM.11910

Pete,

Your best source for bearings and seals for the E is Bearing
services Ltd (BSL)or similar bearing stockist, should be in the
yellow pages. You’ll find them a fraction of the price from any Jag
supplier.
