Dave,
The 6" Daytons are excellent. Be sure to get them
sealed for tubless use, 90% of your future tire mounting
problems will go away. They look nearly identical to
the stock wheels, it takes a good eye to spot them, and if
I have a good eye I always come away not quite sure.
I use mine for autocrossing, and have 205/50-15 Kumho
Victoracers mounted – which are dynamite, but which drop
the car about 2". This improves handling, gives the occasional
potentially dangerous scrape on the road. I only use them for
competition.
Plenty of tires available in 205/70-15, which are the correct
diameter for stock road clearance and speedometer reading.
Read the reviews in tirerack.com and decide on the one you
like. We hear about Avons and Pirellis on the list, and
Yokohamas.
Rubbing, unfortunately, is always a possibility. The body
manufacture seems to have been imprecise enough that you have
to check individually. Also, you have to decide on what constitutes
rubbing. My 185-15 Michelins on the factory wheels rub on the
bump stops lightly when the car is raised completely in the rear.
The 205/50-15s rub a little more. But they are both well clear at
other positions. Will the car go airborne at speed, drop the wheels,
and rip my tires open? That’s the question. I don’t figure it will
happen. I have never seen a mark of any contact after very hard
usage…YMMV.
BTW, the rubber bump stops are angled from their seat, and when
mounted angled outward they are more likely to rub – they can just
be turned around – or removed. The shocks stop the suspension
before it contacts them in any case. Maybe I should say “most shocks”,
cause I don’t know about that. Some folks take the stops off and
grind off the metal mounts to get even more clearance.

Going to be replacing the OEM wheels on my machine and thinking of
going oversize with 6’’ Dayton’s. Any comments re this product and
the max size tire I can get away with without any kind of rub or
necessary body modification. Also, got any recommendations as to a
good tire? I’m interested in a ‘sport’ tire (not race) that will
be a compromise between stick and life. The car will not see much
real distance work and will get some time on the track as in ‘track
days’ not ‘official’ racing. I only mention this from the point of
view of recommended compromise tire(??). Thank you.
