[E-Type] Wheels for S1 63 E-type

Going to be replacing the OEM wheels on my machine and thinking of
going oversize with 6’’ Dayton’s. Any comments re this product and
the max size tire I can get away with without any kind of rub or
necessary body modification. Also, got any recommendations as to a
good tire? I’m interested in a ‘sport’ tire (not race) that will
be a compromise between stick and life. The car will not see much
real distance work and will get some time on the track as in ‘track
days’ not ‘official’ racing. I only mention this from the point of
view of recommended compromise tire(??). Thank you.

Dave,

I have 6.5" center laced MWS wheels on my '64 FHC. Good lookin wheel …
and they widen the track by 1.75" (great for track days). I run 600L x
15 Dunlop Racing tires on the MWS wheels for track/slolom use. I also
have a set of 6" Dayton wheels with Avon CR6ZZ 205/70VR15 tires for road
use. Both tire types are 26.7" in dia, which is close to the dia of the
original RS5 Dunlop. For an all-around tire, the Avon’s are great.

I had to remove the rear bump stops and brackets for the Dayton/Avon
combo. I had minor fender rubbing with the MWS/Dunlop combo. In talking
to others, this varies from car to car.

Cheers,

Dave,

The 6" Daytons are excellent. Be sure to get them
sealed for tubless use, 90% of your future tire mounting
problems will go away. They look nearly identical to
the stock wheels, it takes a good eye to spot them, and if
I have a good eye I always come away not quite sure.

I use mine for autocrossing, and have 205/50-15 Kumho
Victoracers mounted – which are dynamite, but which drop
the car about 2". This improves handling, gives the occasional
potentially dangerous scrape on the road. I only use them for
competition.

Plenty of tires available in 205/70-15, which are the correct
diameter for stock road clearance and speedometer reading.
Read the reviews in tirerack.com and decide on the one you
like. We hear about Avons and Pirellis on the list, and
Yokohamas.

Rubbing, unfortunately, is always a possibility. The body
manufacture seems to have been imprecise enough that you have
to check individually. Also, you have to decide on what constitutes
rubbing. My 185-15 Michelins on the factory wheels rub on the
bump stops lightly when the car is raised completely in the rear.
The 205/50-15s rub a little more. But they are both well clear at
other positions. Will the car go airborne at speed, drop the wheels,
and rip my tires open? That’s the question. I don’t figure it will
happen. I have never seen a mark of any contact after very hard
usage…YMMV.

BTW, the rubber bump stops are angled from their seat, and when
mounted angled outward they are more likely to rub – they can just
be turned around – or removed. The shocks stop the suspension
before it contacts them in any case. Maybe I should say “most shocks”,
cause I don’t know about that. Some folks take the stops off and
grind off the metal mounts to get even more clearance.

Saw a picture of the Dayton wheel for the S1 E-type. It looks good
and I could certainly be happy with it. What I noticed though is
that the hub is different to my OEM. I have something that is
referred to as a ‘‘curly hub’’ I believe. The replacement seemed to
have a more flat appearance. Any comments? Dave–

Dave,

Daytons come in both curly and flat hub styles.
Just order the right type. They are visually
indistinguishable from the original wheels.
I understand they are forged rather than pressed
as the originals are, so they should be stronger.

Dave,
That would be the late S1.5 and S2 versions of the wheel, S3s are similar but wider. All S1 cars had the “curley hub”. Its my understanding that the later version is a little stronger but I prefer the appearance of the curley hub and its the original style.

Thanks again for your help and by the way…2 major parts shop
representatives said Dayton wheel was out of the UK. That’s ok but
my understanding from a couple of other sources was they were right
out of Ohio which makes sense to me. Anyone know for sure? It
helps at this end when it comes to duty time.

Restoration fever is starting to get out of control. Need a
sedative…hello, doctor.

Ok that certainly confirms Dayton wheels are out of Ohio. What
about the kockoffs? Does Dayton manufacture these? If not where do
I go for a quality unit?
