[E-Type] Which wire wheels? MWS vs Dayton

Has anyone had experience with MWS wire wheels, made under Dunlop
license? They are less expensive than Daytons but do they compare
in quality?

thanks,
Nick–

Hi Nick,
I’ll be interested in hearing what folks have to say, IIRC
Dunlop wheels are made in India and don’t have the sealed
option or SS spokes. If that is true they would have to be a
lot cheaper for me to consider them. Daytons are not without
issues though, check them for trueness before you mount your
tires. One of mine had an issue and should have been sent back
but I was anxious to get them on the car and so I put it on
the rear and called it good.
Cheers,
Lynn–

In reply to a message from L.Lynn sent Sun 29 Jan 2012:

According to their website http://www.mwsint.com/OurWireWheels.asp
the wheels are made with stainless spokes, chromed hubs and rims,
and are tubeless. Although they claim to manufacture their
wheels ‘‘to the highest possible standards’’ I cannot find anywhere
on their site a statement about where they are made.–

Nickolas,
I purchased a set of 15x 6.5 72 spoke center lace MWS wheels from
Moss Motors in 2006. I found these to be true and of excellent
quality. Never a leak. Very satisfied. The price then was
$1300. I am not sure where these are manufactured. I am sure Moss
may be helpful.

Moss has your wheels listed at $619.95 each, Don, before shipping.

That’s just under $2,500 for a set of four. Looks like you bought
yours at the right time.

They’re listed on the MWS site at 278 w/o VAT, about US$437. Even
with shipping from the UK the price differential is considerable.–

I bought mine from Dan and Andy here http://classicjaguar.com/

They were sealed and perfect. I do believe they were Dayton as
well…–

I have the 6-1/2" centre-laced MWS wheels, with SS spokes & chromed hubs
& sealed chromed rims. I bought them via the Moss Motors listserv group
buy back in September 2002, and paid $1060 for the set, including
shipping. At the time, the cost would have been an extra $210 per wheel
for all-stainless, and for cost reasons alone I reluctantly elected not
to go all-stainless. [The all-stainless had an additional benefit of
being about 4lbs lighter per wheel].

The wheels have performed very wheel, and I haven’t had to adjust spokes
since I installed them. However, the chrome has deteriorated slightly
on the rims (in the depression where the rim steps down). It’s doesn’t
look terrible, but you can definitely see the issue if you are within a
a couple of feet away. In retrospect, my only regret in getting the MWS
wheels is that I didn’t spend the additional $210/wheel to get the
all-stainless versions.

Hope this helps.

Nickolas,
I have 6x15’’ tubeless Dayton rims. They’ve been absolutely trouble
free. At least 10 yrs old. I think you can buy 4 for $1300 at
Sports & Classics in CT.

I bought a set of 5 6.5x15 MWS wheels new from the UK about 6
months ago. They cost me 1000 pounds plus 200 pounds freight
to Australia, and an further 100 pounds for 5 eared knock
offs.
The wheels have stainless spokes, chromed rims and ‘‘Made In
India’’ hand stamped on the inside of the rim. They look good
and were sealed. They have been sitting in my shed with tyres
on the since but given that my car is not currently drivable I
can’t comment on their reliability.
I thought they were a pretty good buy.–

Save one 5 inch rim to put in the boot, for a spare. The 6 inch rims will not fit, the 6.5 inch are worse.

My 6.5 spare with 205/65/15 tyre seems to fit ok into my FHC
although the jack won’t go in as well. I did make up a short
extension piece for the wheel holder though. The thread is
