[E-Type] Windshield Wipers Won't Turn Off

Dear List,
I am having a problem with my windshield wipers. At first they would go on
for a few seconds every time I turned on the ignition switch and then go off,
but now they stay on constantly as long as the ignition is on.

I fiddled with the adjusting knob for the “park” position (on the firewall)
and the problem went away for awhile, but now it’s back. The wipers now stay
on the whole time the ignition is on, even with the wiper switch turned off.
The wipers operate in the full range - in other words, they go all the way
down to the parked position and back as long as they are running.

Has anyone else had this problem, or any suggestions?

Thanks,

Bill:

I had a problem much like you describe.
I found that the “Link fixing nut” that is on the end of the motor
shaft was loose (the nut attaches the motor to the linkage).

It allows the shaft to move just enough to disable the “Limit Switch”
so it will not park and shut off. You will have to remove the wiper motor
mounting bolts and tilt it toward you to see the nut…Make sure it is tight!

Hello Bill,

I was searching old posts to find out why my wipers are ON when the ignition is turned on, even though the wiper switch is OFF. It’s a new switch. I have a '64 E’type (3.8). Did the cure that was suggested to you solve your problem?

Thanks,
Al

Wow, I’m amazed one can find posts from 24 years ago.

Maybe this will help.

Thanks for the info Harvey. I have a feeling that the “finger” never quite loses contact with the brass plate. Do you recall that the red wire from the brass plate on the park switch goes to a red/light green wire behind the instrument panel?

On my 63 FHC (under restoration) the new wiring harness from Rhode Island Wiring has a red/light green wire that attaches to the (in my case black) wire from the brass plate. I have confirmed that the wipers work and park.

Thanks Harvey! I appreciate the help.
Regards,
Al
